Ali, stone or timber?

Timber.

Interesting thought to use stone : how wide should the cill be - better put, how much wider than the structural opening should the cill be?

Whats going on the reveals? (cladding/render)

Don't forget whatever you put on the reveals will make the "horns" look longer.

Cheers Ed.

Reveals?

Some really nice  bits of timber boarding  - saved  from the wooden packing which came with the windows: knot free, dead straight, stickered outside since delivery. Just needs a run through the thicknesser.  And a good few coats of sealer.

Really looking forward to it.

Kiss the cat for me eh?

or  maybe line them with bits of plastic soffit material --that will be smooth and pretty non stick ,

AND PLENTY OF VIBRATING TO GET AIR BUBBLES OUT

i used an orbital block  sander on outside of one i made  to vibrate the air out

How far either side of the window's structural opening should the sill extend?

About half the length of a facing brick.

Edit: I can take a measurement off my neighbour's build tomorrow if you like?

I've got about 35 alu cills going spare, 180mm deep... free to those in various lengths if desired.

Didn't realize they had to extend past the external face by 25mm ?

Truth be told, half the first batch of 21 were the wrong colour. Suppliers fault.

Only after that did building control actually inspect and find them 10mm short... ?

Not sure that there is any reason for the cill to be any wider than the structural opening, other than aesthetic preference? I'll shortly be fitting aluminium pressings, and they'll be the width of the opening (minus a few mill for fitting and a bead of silicon)

My guess.

During heavy wind driven rain, water flows off glazing, over cill and then drips clear of wall. Without a 100mm extra each end some of the water flow will escape over the cill ends and run down the wall.
