The track can off my digger today.... no sweat, I can fix it:  never done it before, but I'm sure I can.

I think.

Now then, where's that socket set eh? (to release the nut that releases the track tension)

Bugger. It's been nicked - along with all the other stuff that they made off with the other day .  And haven't I just gone and submitted  the insurance claim form. (expletive deleted)ety(expletive deleted).

[? Fair enough - Mods lose it sometimes too]

Any idea which socket set I should buy. Good workman-like set with impact sockets too. Suggestions?

Halfords have some surprising prices on socket sets at present, especially second tier brands. But they also have really expensive ones.

No idea whether they will meet your need,  but I bought a set just for the extension piece recently as it was half price and I had filed all my sets in the garage.

Go via web or sales or vouchers / cashbacks or click and collect, and I usually nurdle a quarter or third off. Even British Cycling or some similar memberships gives you an extra 10% off  the whole lot.

Hi,

Just changed tracks on a three ton takutchi, remove grease nut or greaser,

Then put an old pice of  fence post or something around that  size into the track above the sprocket and drive the track forward and back, that helps bring the idler forward, once you have enough slack in the track, use a bar to ease it off idler whilst slowly turning the track.

Once you remove track clean any debris from idler track and hit it with wood and a sledge hammer to make sure it's fully in,that makes fitting new track easier?

I think Halfords are good value for socket sets, and have a no quibble lifetime g/tee

Another vote for the Halfords sets. Hard to better at the price point. Just don’t buy them at full price as they’re on special vey often.

Alternatively the Bahco sets are very good. I.e. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bahco-S240-Socket-Piece-Square/dp/B0001OZHS0

Thanks boys.

My mate is coming round today with his set of sockets. Thanks @Sandybay. We should manage to get the job jobbed.  @Barney12 - thanks for the tip.  My mate also recommends Bahco, so I think I'll give them a try.

Loss Adjuster arriving tomorrow. That should be fun then .... I'm sure he's a very nice man ?

I've been using 2 identical 1/2" socket sets from Halfords for over 30 years first at work now mainly home. Never an issue with them and no breakage though they only go up to 27mm.

In later years I have swapped out the commonly used sizes in one set with individually bought, 6 point sockets for better grip on old rusted nuts, on the old, rusted things I tend to play with!

I'd also highly recommend a full set of Irwin Bolt Grip Nut Removers like this if dealing with rusty stuff:

https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/5-piece-bolt-grip-set/

They come as a 5 piece set often with space in the case for the "expansion set" which does the intermediate sizes. Shop around. One alternative route if going to the States is to buy the Sears Craftsman set that comes in a slightly bigger red box. Sockets are stamped with the same Patent number. The advantage of the Irwin ones is you can use a spanner/socket or a 3/8" drive.

Edit: I believe you lost a set of these as well didn't you? ?
