  1. I'm looking for a switch which can be powered by PoE, but is quite small. Ideally it only needs one input and two output sockets. Of the two outputs, at least one should also have PoE out. The smallest ubiquiti switch I've found (this) doesn't meet this requirement as it doesn't have PoE out. Just want something small and simple and affordable.
  2. If they get offended when you ask about insurance, they are insecure idiots. And if you are too uncomfortable to ask, then self build is not for you. You are considering hiring them to design your house. If they c**k it up, do you want them to be insured, or would you rather have avoided offending them?
  3. This is incorrect. The floor it sits on just needs to not be flammable. Tile is fine if it is thick enough.
  4. There is no such thing as a certification of competence. You should just ask to see their insurance cover, and whilst you are at at you might as well ask about the difference between an architect and an architectural designer, and see what they say. If they have insurance, they obviously have nothing to hide and can show you all of their insurance documents. If they don’t want to show you, then you have your answer: don’t touch with a barge pole.
  5. A new build without a DPC. Whatever next, voting leave without somewhere to leave to..?
  6. This year. But what about next year?
  7. Surely this is dangerous. Somebody in the corridor can get knocked out by an opening door.
  8. I would look at the position of the toilets in each of the bathrooms on the first floor. Ideally toilets should be mounted on external walls. It makes them much quieter than having them on internal walls, particularly if the other side of the internal wall is a bedroom, as is the case with most of your toilets. Sometimes having them on an external wall can also make the waste plumbing easier.
  9. can you explain this please.
  10. This used to be a favourite of mine. If i remember rightly, one of the energy systems you could build was a satellite to receive microwave energy from space, that was generated by giant PV in space. Well, it seems some scientists have been playing a little bit too much of this simulation game: https://news.sky.com/story/scientists-discuss-using-satellites-to-beam-solar-energy-collected-in-space-to-earth-12752937 If i recall correctly, if something when wrong with your microwave satellite, the microwaves would hit a neighbouring supermarket or, even worse, school. It was a fun game. Doesn't sound so much fun in reality though!
  11. Double sided. Good idea!
  12. We have a rather large decorative toilet roll holder in our downstairs loo. It is hung on a tiled wall, the other side of which is our TV room. Whenever somebody uses the toilet roll, it rattles against the tiles. The rattling is barely audible on the toilet side, but the wall must act as some sort of amplifier/drum and the sound in the TV room is really noticeable. The toilet roll frame (the decorative bit) is made of metal and about 8mm wide and 8mm thick. It forms a rectangle which is about the size of an A4 sheet of paper with the toilet roll hung at the bottom. It is only attached to the wall by two screws at the top of the rectangle. I’m thinking that if I insert some rubber between the frame and the tiles, they might dampen the rattling. Do you think this will work: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Amazon-Brand-Stripping-Adhesive-Excluder/dp/B09L7P2RWT/ref=mp_s_a_1_8?crid=1M8QH6PD9G113&keywords=high+density+self+adhesive+rubber+anti+vibration&qid=1669107111&sprefix=high+density+self+adhesive+rubber+anti+vibration+%2Caps%2C68&sr=8-8
  13. We have unglazed encaustic cement tiles on the floor of our family bathroom. We also have unglazed zellige on a feature wall in our lounge. The bathroom ones are sealed with two coats of a sealant made by Fila. No real issues with mould that I can see, although we’ve only had them in for about 6 months. As for salt deposits, I think the same logic would apply. i think you just need to invest in a high quality sealer and take your time with making sure it is sealed properly. You would be surprised how much money you can spend on sealants. They might need resealing every few years. Btw, just because something is unglazed doesn’t necessarily mean it is non slip.
  14. This is just a design issue. You don’t need a a physical separator, just a well thought out layout and well specified shower screen. In our two wet rooms, we still have shower screens, but they are of the fixed variety, allowing you to walk in and out of the shower without having to open/close anything. They work really well.
  15. Do not do that. Really not good Feng shui to have anything work related in the bedroom. The bedroom should be a place of rest. Anything that remind you of work will interfere with that, even if only at a subconscious level.
  16. This is much better! Solves all the problems.
  17. In a word, yes. But it’s your house. i wouldn’t do it in mine. Think about the smell after your fella does a poo. Would you want to walk through that to get to your bedroom.
  18. Alternatively, this would get rid of the corridor problem, make the bathroom more spacious and keep the washbasin within the bathroom: I’ve put doors in as normal doors, because sliding doors will not give you the soundproofing you want. And I’ve moved that small chest of drawers/wardrobe to the bedroom. It could your fella’s so that you getting dressed don’t bother him.
  19. If you really want a large sun lounge, then keep it as it is, but otherwise I would take some space from that. It’s not insurmountable to raise the floor level 50cm and knock down and erect a new wall. Others will be able to advise, but maybe £2.5k in material costs and labour.
  20. The layout you have come up with is very functional but not very generous. Everything feels boxy and the corridor effect claustrophobic. Do you have to have a walk in wardrobe? I find they only work well if they are spacious and have plenty of natural light. As far as I can see there is no natural light in that walk-in wardrobe. I guess you could compensate with high CRI light bulbs. Do you need all that space for a sun lounge? Could you take a 75cm wide strip from the sun lounge to make your master suite bigger?
  21. I really like Tado, though I might be the only fan on this forum.
  22. I think that is part of the intergalactic highway from the hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy.
  23. To be clear: my wood burner is a guilty pleasure. I find snuggling up in front of it relaxing, and it really is something we use infrequently. We will burn locally felled wood where possible, but at the moment all our stocks are wet. Hence splashing out on a few bags of dry logs. not sure to what extent this is just marketing, but our stove complied with the most stringent EU regs, I think it’s called EcoDesign.
  24. So recommendations on where to buy kiln dried logs? An online supplier that delivers to London would be best.
