  1. Just no nails or something similar. No screws required.
  2. So the old stuff is OK, new stuff is made of toffee wrappers. The Max boilers come with 10 / 12 years but have to be installed and serviced by a Max qualified engineer, and you have to use their engineers to repair them, which is up to a 7 day callout. There are much better boilers on the market, and £1200 for a 30KW system boiler is a bit lumpy on price too.
  3. Hallway is a pointless zone. It is a circulation space so I would if I had to zone it go with bedrooms and living rooms. unless you really want to have a whole load of expensive controllers, having two or three groups of spaces is ideal as heat transfers between them anyway. If you currently have radiators, ask yourself how often you go round turning them on or off... then decide if you really need a £70 controller and zone valve doing the same
  4. +1 to WundaTrade for UFH. Simple controls, no silly number of zones, go for the Wilo pump option and auto balancing actuators. Boilers are horses for courses - if your plumber is a WB man then that’s what they will be comfortable with, same with Vokera. if it’s Ideal Standard, time to find a new plumber ...
  5. Wilko have Dulux 5 litre Easycare at £26 which makes it £5.20 a litre so really good value.
  6. Leyland and Johnston's but also own the Dulux brand in Canada ..! Guy I buy from has a big trade supply chain so makes me wonder, and pretty sure he stocks Leyland and Dulux. Got me wanting to check now ..!
  7. PIR will break up over time. Timber or sealant or both.
  8. Always been an issue - same with joist expansion. The only “expansion” issues are normally the opposite - shrinkage. Frames shrinking is a problem, but engineered timber has taken a lot of that away too.
  9. across its grain ..?? Thermally that’s 0.015mm/m/C so he’s got to worry about 0.042mm expansion ... lending him a dial gauge to check it ..? ?
  10. It’s a myth. Expansion coefficient of chipboard is tiny - 0.03-0.04 mm/m/deg C so a 20 degree change summer to winter will be around 3-4mm at most over the room width of 4m. A 10mm expansion gap both ends means the whole floor has about 500% expansion capacity. The downside is that BCOs expect to see a static 8-10mm expansion gap, but as I said I would fill that with cheap acrylic sealant and then put a skirting over it when it’s all been boarded and you’ll never see it. @zoothorn if you’re putting Lino down then fill it with sealant and go over the top with the Lino at the doorway and job done.
  11. It won’t expand. It’s a myth. Cover it with a piece of timber and move on.
  12. Piece of 10mm x 40mm timber glued to the flooring and sealed to the step edge with CT1 or similar. Covers the gap, job done.
  13. First question would be how did you pay..? Then the next is do you have a quotation from them..?
  14. Yeh agree but he is only going to 2m.... Either way, I would always say they are a must have when doing any ceiling work
  15. mine is £108.98 delivered... I win... ?
  16. They come in a big cardboard box £110 seems to be the best rate I can find but I'm sure I've seen them cheaper https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dry-Wall-Plaster-Board-Lift-55597-Panel-Sheet-Hoist-drywall-Panel-plate-lifter-j/372485192444?hash=item56b9d8fafc:g:x1AAAOSw011bngUo
  17. Where does the land drain connect to ..?? Does it go to a solid pipe then to the pond ..? Only issue will be ground saturation when the pipe fills with water during a storm in a dry spell. Which direction does the pipe flow..?
  18. Price is one factor but I was also told Wickes paint is manufactured by PPG - who make Dulux ! I've used all of their range of specialist emulsion paints (Bathroom, Kitchen, T&W) and never had a problem. I've also got a source for PPG trade stock / rebrands etc and buy at significantly less than RRP.
  19. I’ve binned off using Dulux and now use the Wickes own tough and washable range. https://www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-Pure-Brilliant-White---No-0-Tough+Washable-Matt-Emulsion-Paint---5L/p/121920
  20. For the difference in cost (~£1/m) I would upgrade to 10mm anyway as it is easier to do now than in the future.
  21. That is less than standard ..! Min 600x600 up here for a trench fill foundation. What insulation is going into the floor / walls / roof..? And have you not considered selling the blocks as if you didn’t pay much you will get £1 a block for them as they are at a premium currently.
  22. Change the building method to make it lightweight and then build it on screw piles. Will be quick and simple and should be lower cost.
