SWMBO light choice turned up today . I’m assuming I am being very thick - but I can’t see what holds the bulb in place . The bulb fitting doesn’t fix to the recess . So the bulb just dangles on its flex - can’t be right . I’m being dim like the bulb for sure 🙄🙄🙄

It was . I’ve been a good boy ; ask@Nickfromwales

It’s interesting that the sky lights within the build never have condensation. You would assume moisture would get stuck up there and settle on the cooler glass .
-
Did that - but got bored and decided having a life was better .
-
Got another one of these light wells to do soon ( ish ) . Going to build it in a similar way but leave a nice hole at the top . Get the glass on and see what happens . A proper comparative test @Radian ! Drilling the other to make a hole of some kind will be a pita ; so want proof of theory .
-
Did actually think about plants in there and whether they would add / subtract from the moisture . I might be able to stick a hole in the insulation outside the build ( but next to the light well ) . Wouldn’t be at the top though ( assume I really need it as near to the glass as possible ) .

Of course !!

Ok . So I need to get the lighwell temperature to match the outside temperature yes ?
-
Oh ! There I was thinking a simple fan / vent was the solution 🙄. It ‘ feels’ drafty in the light well ( not sure why / how ) - circulating that air any help ?
-
Ok - erm . So what should I do to remove the excess moisture?? . Are you suggesting heating the light well ?
-
Well ! I tested that . Build nice and warm ; light well (expletive deleted)ing freezing . I left the ‘window ‘ open thinking mvhr on the build might circulate the air . But no joy . Assume I need an inline extractor - with pipe up to the glass ???
-
I bought loads . But I use them in ‘ isolated ‘ places ; otherwise I feel it’s over use . Will dig up the link - they weren’t expensive. No grouting . But will ‘ drift ‘ so need to be careful
-
Nope . Triple glazed window between build and light well

I’ve got some metal stud in the utility room as that was done first and was subject to water getting in . It’s ok to install - being straight is good . Not sure I prefer it over timber though . I found the metal rivets a real pita to ‘bite’ - but that’s probably me rather than a failing of the material. I *think* timber is still cheaper …. ???!

This light well is outside the insulated build . So has zero insulation or ventilation. As you can see it gets condensation on the inside of the glazing . Doesn’t block the light - but looks a bit crap . I’ve no intention of drilling the upstand it sits in for ventilation. Was wondering if a pipe up in the light well and some kind of extractor at the bottom of it would be sufficient to drag the air and moisture down …. 🤔

Admin ; can we make this a sticky ? . Perhaps on the main login page ; big flashing font at the top of the screen I think .

Don’t think flux will benefit me as I go out my way to use rather than export

Where is the kWh price heading in 2022?

HS2 is a mega money pit ! Also how ( what time scale ! ) will it ever return its investment costs . Some nukes be far better ( power stations not missiles ) -
@Russell griffiths as you showed faith in my skills improvement here’s a photo of the other wall done last week . ‘Drift ‘ across board faces around 2mm or so ….
-
Took off the last stud I did yesterday as correcting the other one seemed to suggest an issue with this one . Cant tell in the photo but a bit of crap has fallen down behind the membrane right at the top . Hit the membrane ; shatters crap - stud now tight to the wall ( not rude ) . Must remember to check membrane by feel for lumps
-
Which planet you on ?
-
Redone now . It was level at the bottom I.e skirting . This one drifted out only at the top - so probably put a level across the middle where it’s ok .m; didn’t notice until board up
-
Yeah . As “ worry “ takes over that particular board I took down and managed to get the stud in an additional 5mm or so . It still ‘ bends ‘ but less noticeable. It’s when you stick a straight edge across the face - like a long spirit level you see the wobbles across multiple boards ! . From my experience of plasters . I did a bathroom ceiling and it was super (expletive deleted) level ; laser proved it . Got it skimmed ; looked great . Put up some straight beading - at either end touching the ceiling - in the middle maybe 10mm out . Plasters are indeed only human and judge by eye .
-
Done plenty of studwork and never worried about a bit of drift . I’m now doing a long wall ( 14m ) I notice once I’ve boarded typically a bow on some boards . Studs must be out or warped I assume . Worst case is around 10mm in the centre . Is this acceptable drift ? . Once skimmed and painted will it be even noticeable??
