There is no better sound than a few stones slapping about in a mixer , it means the days work is soon to end. For what Ian needs a 1 barrow electric mixer will be fine but I wouldn't want to attempt a block house with one. You would never be away from the mixer.

Having the ability to take a deep breath and not punch some idiot square in the nose is not taught in any book but it will come in handy in every build.

Have seen many a man run for the hills when they realise the handle is stuck. Trying to turn a mixer of with the handle swinging is def a skill few have.

Prime the engine with a squirt of quick start in the exhaust and swing on it till your arm near falls of. At just that point flick the compression on and make sure you take the handle with you.

That is very tasty lead work indeed. Looks better oiled up as well!!!! -
From my external wall to where my system joins into the mains is approx 60m. I have 3 manholes along the route as well as access at the wall if needed to rod. As long as you have enough fall I doubt you would have any problems. Just make sure all the pipes are cut square and butted fully in place and most importantly you have filed any cuts so there are no ragged edges to catch toliet paper.

Don't be afraid to build a few extra wall plate straps in, they really help to keep the block work steady. The whole self build journey is based on the faith and trust you have in a tradesman or company and once it's lost its usually lost for good. As you say it is a happy ending but has still left a site taste.

I used them zinseer paints before to hide mould stains and they definitely work.

Knocking a house down.
Declan52 replied to TheMitchells's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Depends on if you want to knock it down or take it down. If it's being knocked down a few days hire of a 13t digger and driver and it will be gone. You can spread the remaining material over the plot for a better road in or just to raise the levels. Only other cost is disposal if you can't use it on site. Taking it down so you salvage materials takes time so costs more. But you might make money back depending on what's there. -
Think he needs to buy a cordless drill and quit the morse code tap tap bang bang method.

Bt where looking near £500 to install mine. Talk talk done it for free. Whoever you go with you will only be stuck with for the first contact length, 12-18m. I argued the bit out with bt but it was some guy in India so was very frustrating with me loosing the rag a few times. I only needed approx 20m of cable as the pole is in my garden but they wouldn't budge. Open reach guy done the survey but I didn't pay anything for it.

Go in and ask to speak to the main branch manager. Stop all orders of everything. Tell them that unless you get this sorted you won't be buying another nail from them. Take no shit whatsoever and make a big song and dance in the shop in front of people. If he doesn't give you what you want phone the main office and give off stink and tell them all and same again that not 1p will be spent in there joint.

Patination Oil to lead - to coat or not
Declan52 replied to Stones's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
Its a one person job. The platform at the top is 4 8ft planks so you have as good as an 8*4 platform to work on so plenty of room. You can walk at the extreme ends as the planks will see saw. As its 4 trestles and 6 planks its a fairly heavy platform so it is steady. If you have both trestles at their highest pin setting it will wobble a bit but it won't need braced and will easily work freestanding. If you have a wall to put it against it will help but its not needed. I used it for my vaulted hallway as I couldn't get kwikstage in with the stairs. If you are worried about the ladder slipping put a concrete block there to stop it moving. There is no type of work platform that is rock solid, they all wobble about when you move on them esp the higher you go and the more weight you have on them. A simple rule to follow is if your no good at heights then don't work at heights. To dangerous to be 8ft plus of the ground if you are a nervous wreck. -

Crates or tiny trestles are the best for that but even I would think twice about being 8ft up on crates !! -

Perfectly safe, used it like this loads of times. Gets you around 8ft high and its very easy to put up and move around. 4 trestles and 6 8ft planks is all you need. Onlys dodgy when you start using milk crates and wheelie bins.
