Vaillant ashp (my battle with).
Big Jimbo replied to zoothorn's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
Zoot. I am very jealous of your cabin overlooking the water. If i ever become homeless, i am going to squat in there. Live in the cabin. Go for a walk for your mental health, every day, and collect wood. Keep your little wood burner ticking over 24 hours a day, and when you are too warm, (even in the winter) open the window. Sit in your armchair, and write a great book. (We all have One good book in us). When you are too hot, it will make you sleepy. Just let yourself drift off, regardless of time of day. Sounds way more fun than living in your house fella. -

Zoot has got some mass, and that should store some heat, and block some heat loss. althought might have a shite U value it would still do the above. It ain't because the heat is gone before it gets there. -

Might cause dead rot, dry rot, cold rot, snot rot, or whatever bloody else. Zoot the hoot (no offense fella) will be dead by then from the fecking cold. Just because you have some shite old stone crumbly walls or whatever, does not stop you heating a house up. The bloody heat escaping is what stops the bloody walls eventually heating up. If you build 4 outside walls 1m thick, and light a bloody great fire in the middle of the room. You might still not get the walls to heat up if you forgot to put a bloody roof on. Zoots house is freezing cold, because no matter how much heat he pumps in, The place leaks like a sieve. Block up a load of those escape routes, and retain the heat within the building. The heat never reaches the stone cold walls, because it's all gone before it gets there. -

So, as i said, Holes around the top and bottom, through the plasterboard, and the 25mm PIR behind it, into the air gap top and bottom, and seal the bloody things up. That way, you have a dead air space, and a chance for that air to retain heat. -

So the thick brick block, or stone wall is in effect doing nothing. The heat in the air gap is not being obtained by the wall. Its being washed away by that space being open to free air. -

@-rick- if the framed filled with Pir is not tight to the wall, and stands off the wall at the top and bottom, chances are you have the tent effect, just like badly done dot and dab ? -

Big Jimbo replied to zoothorn's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
@-rick- so is the heat going through the ceiling, through the floor, and rising through the upper floor between the outside wall, and the PIR in the wood frame ? Then rising through into the roof space, and being blown out through the tiles / eaves vents ? -

Plasterboard on dot and dabs is fine if @nod is doing it, but you seldom see it done well. Hence the tent eh @ProDave -

My own thoughts are, if you do indeed have a plasterboard tent, as @ProDave has suggested. on the upstairs near to the ceiling, i would drill some 10mm holes all around the top and bottom of the plasterboard. All around the whole room. Buy a few cans of squirty foam, and using the holes, foam up around the whole, top and bottom edge. While i appreciate that there would be no insulation behind the rest of the plasterboard in those area, the effect would be that the air in those areas would heat up through the plasterboard, but as it would be a sealed area, the heat would not be wind washed away. The holes would be easy to make good, with a bit of scrim, and filler. I am willing to stand corrected, but i bet that would make the upstairs rooms a lot warmer. Could do the same downstairs if that is the same. Plasterboard on dabs etc. -
I have done mine at 6 meters back.

Another VoC. Take a punt and just start?
Big Jimbo replied to flanagaj's topic in Planning Permission
I used to have planning enforcement down to my place all the time. Building an unauthorised structure in the garden, which turned out to me laying a lawn. I told them to f.off. I then had a legal letter sent to them saying that if they came to my property again, wasting my time, without doing due dilligence first. I would sue the arse off them. Never heard from them since, but i expect when i start my build, they will come calling. I might throw eggs at them next time. I have not made my mind up yet. I find the level of intelligence within the council to be rather lacking. Highways came to inform me that i had to keep the ditch at the front of the property clear. I pointed out that it was full of water. He replied exactly. I pointed out that the reason my ditch was full of water was because i was the only twat in the lane that bothered to keep my ditch clear, while all the others are blocked or non existant. I asked how much he was willing to pay for my education services. He mumbled something, got back in his car, and drove off. Twat. Then there was the twat from the council, who came about my garden fire. I asked him when the council had made the area, a no smoke zone. They hadn't, so i told him i could store 50tons of wood, and burn something like 5tons a day. To f.off and not come back. The list goes on. Total muppets, sharing a brain cell between them. -
I did a block plinth several years ago. Used sharp sand and cement with a load of water proofer in the mix. Used a sponge to finish it off. Quite enjoyed it to be honest. painted it black when dry. It lasted at least 10 years, till i sold the place. The old PVC ain't cheap, and you can see ripples if the chucked up blockwork is a bit iffy.

Contract Administrator - cost queries
Big Jimbo replied to Jothetaxi's topic in Surveyors & Architects
I have worked directly for clients over the years who have used an architect, and the architect has appointed the main contractor. The architect only puts the job out to his pals, who look after him at crimbo, for tender. It has never ended well. Years ago, i had a friend who was One of the Architects mates. He used to get told, you are not getting this job, so i need your quote to be this. he would sometimes be no1, other times not. The architect defo used to get well looked after by his favoured contractors. (The only Ones he ever went out to tender) Just saying......... -

If you have got a pain in the butt neighbour it would be safer. However, you can always ask for forgiveness if it gets pulled. -

How to attached studwall with cavity with no ceiling connection

If you put a bit of DPC behind the bracket, and a squirt oif silicon in the screw hole, how is any water going to get to the timber frame ? -
When i was in banking, many moons ago, i had a fair bit of money spent on me, about reading people. It was years ago, butb has held me in good stead. Having been a member on here for quite a few years i believe @Onoff to be the sort of fella who would pop round with the box of screws you are short of. Stay and help, and expect nothing in return. I think quite a few people on here are similar. If i had a few bob, and was not so bloody skint, i'd like to buy a camper van. I could travel around and rock up, just to give a helping hand to someof the people on here. I'd bring ,bacon, sausages, and rolls and tommy sauce. Frankly, i think i would have a load of fun, with the bonus feel good factor, knowing that you might have made a bit of difference. I have found that the older i get, my mental health is defo not what it used to be.
