Thanks - dare say it will sit for a week before we get started then some will be a couple of weeks before they are up.

Merchant suggests we'll not need to let the cladding acclimatise on site since we're doing board on board. That sound about right?
-
Thanks - Jewsons are working out £3.44 and they're the next cheapest.

I can't find any detail of cavity barriers at lintels, and I had a quick play about with a rockwool batt and a lintel and it doesn't look like there's the room to fit it in. Any thoughts?

Went to visit a self build, they had geothermal
eandg replied to CalvinHobbes's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
For geothermal you surely need scale and a heavy load for it to be viable. I have been told that in Denmark they run pipes up to 30km from geothermal mines to get heat to population centres. -
Brick cladding when the glazing is already installed ?
eandg replied to Post and beam's topic in Brick & Block
I've got this for my windows to try and protect them from any stray mortar - not sure it'll help if the brickies skelp them with facing brick mind. -
Looks really good too. Are those openings splayed?

Your blog was the inspiration for our plans - looks fantastic. Did you manage to fit any insulation in behind the ply?
-
Any more recent examples of pricing for larch? Cheapest I've found from 4 quotes is £2.46 per linear metre for 22*150mm.

Had vaguely thought we'd have some nice birch plywood reveals (all round) but bit concerned about the rising costs of the material and now we'll need to start thinking about our reveals and cills. What did you use and would you recommend?

Is this sub-standard. Sanity check needed!
eandg replied to devondumpling's topic in Heat Insulation
If you've time it's easily DIYable. We did all our insulation ourselves for this reason - knew trades would be half-arsed and have no attention to detail. Nothing a bit of foam and some foil tape won't sort. -
Our valuation surveyor (mid-build) said "eco-houses" should do very well going forward. Maybe an outlier as there's still some dinosaurs but I definitely think the cost of energy will be changing people's views on sustainable housing and adding an extra few grand to what they're willing to pay.

Can anyone provide a potential cost to clad this in brick please
eandg replied to Post and beam's topic in Brick & Block
Rough guide here. You'll be anywhere between 50p and £1.50 a brick depending on what you want (common bricks through to handmade). Not knowing labour costs in your area budget for £1 per brick laid (N.B. usually costed to include the openings, so maybe 20% more or £9k). Plus then £800-1200 for ancillaries (lintels, dpc, weep vents, sand, cement). -
Is there any benefit in using the insulated cavity barriers at corners, floor levels etc compared to 2*2s wrapped in DPC? I can see the benefit fit windows but unclear if they add anything elsewhere.

I have a 50mm cavity - would these be sound?

How do you remove packers? There's one left on one or our doors on the external side of the airtight membrane but hadn't thought of removing it.
-
Will let you know and maybe pop by for a nosy at the same time. Is it particularly inferior to the Cedral?
-
We have a mix of facing brick and timber so was going to just run same facing brick. I'll look into whether we can just flash it/use a product like tough buttercup or need a cill (quite like the look of that but will be more expensive).
-
Thanks both... will be doing in Scotland in February so there are fridge-like qualities in the natural environment!
-
Thanks - so question is whether 10mm gap would be too tight now to get the compriband (I have the 7/12mm stuff) in?
-
Looks good (and replying for ease of reference).
-
I got some from Platinum Chemicals - was about the cheapest I could find and free delivery over £75.
-
Did you just go with trickle vents then Kelvin? We've had ours - with trickle vents - installed and I'm wondering about airtightness issues now. I know others have used Fakro and got vent blanks made to address this but spoke with the Velux rep today and he wasn't aware of anyone doing similar (and seemed to think the windows were airtight with the trickle vents closed, albeit not an expert on the matter).
-
Ish, I think. More a proper cill product like this - not sure if it's just a case of replicating window dolls to sit above brick/blockwork at ground level.
-
Looks great. I normally do quick and dirty but just confirming I'm following that sketch correctly - layer of foam behind the compriband then effectively cap and hide it with the reveal?
