Changing them to LEDs is not exactly solving my issue. However I did already try this on a few of the lamps when I got fed up of the heat, the LED replacement halogen tubs just aren't bright enough, and the white light isn't as effective as the halogen tubes either.

Cooooool!

Got a lot of 110v halogen site lights that I was given for free. They were useful at first and early stages of the build as we had an transformer on each level. However now we are edging closer to completion it would prove a lot easier to do away with the transformers and convert these to 240v to be able to quickly move from room to room and use the house sockets. Is is it simply a case of changing the plug, is there actually any internals in these lights that make them 110v? It is only me that works on site now so no issues with contractors etc getting confused and using them incorrectly, although not really likely as plugs wouldn't fit obviously.

I used 2 core electrical flex, have used telecoms jumper wire in the past. If it's copper it will work, but yes audiophiles will freak. But unless every other component of your listening experience is on point, the cable is probably the least of your worries.

Decent looking place, small showroom but nice examples of their work. And lots of work on show outside as guys had moved the workshop outside to enjoy the sun. I've given them some dimensions and will await a rough quote back, then arrange a site survey to discuss how to actually attach the bloody thing. I do really like this example from their showroom with the hardwood handrail, could tie in nicely with my cladding.

I think these photos have already put me off cranked uprights, although they've done a tidy job, just too much of a beast of a thing to have in my setting. However im going to take a drive over to that place now @Onoff and see what they've got to say, thanks for the find!

Thanks Nick, a few people have mentioned cranked uprights but I can't find anything online, certainly not in any sort of modern stainless steel style?

spoke to a friend earlier to has a similar situation, 30m of balustrade over GRP. He just fixed the post bases directly to his timber sub floor and used a soudal sealant on every possible location that water could ingress and then some more! 3 years on he hasn't had any issues...
-
I don't have any photos since the GRP was done, but essentially it has small risers along the short edges and this screed created the fall to front. Dimensions are approx 2m x 7m x 2m
-
Yep, the is the only mention of a balustrade in a the plans - very detailed Ive looked in to it a little more and apparently they are never installed flush to the ground anyway, you have a "drain plate" underneath each bolt which raises the whole base rail between 2-5mm to allow water to flow underneath. So this could work and allow the water to flow out to the gutter?
-
Yes, I could drill through the Cedral cladding, to the block work behind, then pack out a long thunderbolt with some sort of tube washer to ensure I was only fixing against the block and not the cladding itself. Would fixing to the wall at 2 ends of a U shape be sufficient? Can the feet just sit on the GRP then? What about people leaning on the handrail?
-
I'd love a frameless system, however I cannot see how this will work with a base channel all along the front, as it would essentially prevent the water from running off. Could I mount a base channel up off the GRP on several raised pads at suitable intervals - thinking this could look a bit naff though?
-
It has a fall towards the front, with a drip bead that will go in to a gutter, the gutter is the piece that is causing my issues with face mounted posts - surely this is a common problem though?

Resurrecting my own thread. I'm now at the moment where I need to sort the balustrade. The balcony above was completed with a fibreglass flat roof covering. However I now need to sort fixing balustrade posts down in to it, I understand that a popular method is to fit a secondary timber pad on top of the existing covering, then fibreglass this as well, then fix the posts in to this pad. However I cannot find any info on this method whatsoever, videos or forum guidance - not sure of what Google terms to use but everything I've tried hasn't worked. Im mainly trying to find out if after doing this does the screws for the post only attach to the new timber pad, or does it still penetrate both layers of fibreglass and attach in to the subfloor (block and beam overboarded with ply) Thanks and all comments / guidance welcome.

That was was another option which was discussed, there was just concern about whether it could be switched back to natural gas again once we are ready? Don't want to boll***s up a £1500 boiler obviously.

I knew asking on here first was a good idea ? For Sale: Old Gloworm Boiler - not yet converted to LPG ?
-
Is that an immersion heater? I did ask my plumber if the heating could be run off an immersion heater, not sure exactly what he said but didn't seem to be a go-er. Ive got a Vailliant 38kw system boiler going in if that is useful info? Where abouts within the system would the Willis heater go?

As the title states, I'm in a bit of a pickle. There is major works required in order to connect my mains gas. I also need to commission my UFH before I can bring in my engineered oak flooring / oak door etc (if I am wrong in this part please do let me know!) Currently the plan is to knock together some sort of temporary calor gas boiler arrangement, plumber mate has managed to acquire an old gloworm boiler he thinks he can convert to LPG. We will probably set this up temporarily outside or in the garage. Before I head off down this road I thought I'd check here that i hadn't missed any other obvious solutions? And that's i am correct in needing to have fired up the heating and warmed the slab through before I bring in any of my solid wood products? Oak flooring will be stuck down if that makes any difference? Thanks all

Credit/Debit Reward Cards, Discounts etc
Grosey replied to Ferdinand's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Thanks all, doe anyone have the phone number for the helpline several have mentioned? Will give them a call on Monday. My gut thought now is that it's a great way to save for normal purchases. But for anyone doing a new build and looking to reclaim VAT, it's probably a risk not worth taking. I'll report back next week once I've spoken to HMRC. Thanks all all for your help and concern, happy to be a guinea pig, worst case scenario is I've lost £190, quite a pain but I won't let it consume me if it is to be the case. I'll make that back Savings on other things in my day to day life now I've realised how many different gift cards I can buy through my employer.- 151 replies

Here's mine, congested yes. Note I only added a bit of Insulation lagging as a suggestion from the liquid screed guy to buy myself a little bit of play when I adjust the position of the manifold / board.

Grosey replied to Ferdinand's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
They are more than happy to do it, it's more how I present all the pieces of the puzzle and paperwork to HMRC when I come to do my VAT reclaim at the end of the build. Already thinking the various bits through I'm worried they are going to reject certain elements where I have paid using gift card.- 151 replies

Credit/Debit Reward Cards, Discounts etc
Grosey replied to Ferdinand's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Just bought some paint in b and q and asked for a VAT receipt and they were unable to provide one. I expect because I've already paid the VAT when I purchased the gift card. An important issue to clarify as I could be making a potentially expensive mistake here! No point saving 9% if it prevents me from saving 20% vat!- 151 replies

Grosey replied to Ferdinand's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
@Ferdinand how does vat reclaim work regarding gift card usage? i purchased £1750 at 9% off for b and q through work. I have an invoice for that which includes the vat. I then bought a kitchen to the value of £1738 but all my paperwork states "this is not a VAT invoice" - I paid at the till and my till receipt just states the amount taken from the gift card and the remaining balance. There's a chance I'll get a full receipt when the kitchen is delivered. But I'm not sure.- 151 replies

Could you clarify what you mean by "Current stresses are set about 7%"? Do you mean could I still afford my mortgage if interest rates went to 7%? Probably not! ?

I have built this enclosure around a 900 x 1500 tray. This came about as we wanted body jets and a walk in shower but couldn't figure out a way to not have 1 set of jets firing across the room! So the enclosed section is 1000 x 900 created by the little stud partition. Rainfall shower head coming from the ceiling. No idea how much it'll splash especially when using body jets and moving about, but there's noggins in the wall to install some glass if required, although I'm not sure how it'll work if it proves to splash so much it'll need fully enclosing.... probably a curtain with rubber ducks on it and hang my head in shame!
