Willis heater ASHP backup discussion

1600w at -10! I haven’t even finished my current house, but I am feeling the draw of going down the passive house route and building from scratch next. -
Willis heater ASHP backup discussion

I’m impressed. How many are you using? Just the one? I have gone the same same route as mention by JSH and Joe90 using the Carrier based ASHP (with complete self installation including all the UFH, rads and DHW). But due to a ballsup on my behalf, which ProDave has fixed, I installed the willis a couple of days ago and am quite surprised how well it works. However even with the cockups I reckon I’ve spent significantly less than £2k for the lot (that’s including my 300L Unvented hotwater cylinder which was my biggest expense). If we have a winter like last year (which is forecast to be colder) then payback should be counted in months rather than years -
Great job thanks @ProDave ?

That’s pretty impressive temp control. Am I reading this correctly that you are currently only using Willis heater(s) to heat your UFH? -
IVT Ecolane ASHP - any owners out there?

Any photos of the rest of the system or your customer controller? ? -
I’ve got a 3 minute delay between signal to the 2 port valves (which trigger the circulation pump) and the ASHP.
-
Oh dear... well if it turns out you need a new 3 port valve (if it’s not just as simple as turning it around) I have a spare one that came with the installation kit that I didn’t use.

Was it never working properly before the ‘incident’ with the thermostat?

@testom it’s all far too complicated for me to get my head around... but pictures are always good! -

So I have now installed my willis heaters... TBH it’s a bit of a cobbled together affair, as I wanted to get some sort of heating ASAP for SWMBO, but it does seem to be working... the temp in the UFH manifold is creeping up slowly. ? I can now think about making it prettier over the next few weeks. Many thanks to @Nickfromwales for your advice and guidance. ??? As a side point, I am wondering if there is a way to split the second part of this thread (where it deviated away from the Cool Energy ASHP) into a new thread for any future forum members to find a bit easier? -
Just seen the other thread... looks like it might need programming. ?

Great news @joe90 you are on the home run now!! i’m interested To know if you need to programme the new board or if it comes with the default settings.

Close enough! It’s the precursor to being on crime stoppers isn’t it?!

@HerbJ nice project. Funny how things change in such a short time. Offshore wind farms now seem to be the bread and butter work to support the “glamorous” projects. I have 3 consulting companies supporting my (day job) project all of which have several large wind farms things ongoing at once.

It seems every NZ programme a total pisstake of itself. The news reports sounds like Rhys Darby! “It’s like a giant praying mantis or something out of thunderbirds” not something you’d hear on BBC.?

Which of those was related to your profile pic!! ?

Latest concrete house on grand designs.

Exactly this issue I had. 3 architects and no imagination. Typically the LA kept restricting things so we ended up with a standard box! ? -
Is every one on here a pervert!! ?

Do you pics of your build somewhere? I’d be interested to see something non-conventional built by a real person rather than an architect on GD! -
So there seems to be an endless stream of TV programmes with self builders etc but I only actually know 1 person who has ever been on any building show... and that was DIY SOS in Bristol the other week... he had one line when asked his age...”47” amoungst a bunch of 20 YO’s shovelling tons of sand. There are 2 “grand designs” near me but never met the lunatics who decided to put the most stressful parts of their lives on show for no financial reward. Who here, if anybody, has been on TV? I think @JSHarris was on scrap heap challenge and @Nickfromwales was on DIY SOS.... anyone else???

Ah should have paid more attention!! ? Another thing to to think about that I learned whilst building is to really consider the views from each window. I changed 2 in the end (one moved by 300mm and widened one by 600mm) when the openings became visible as it framed the countryside much better. Really glad I did it now as it has total transformed the rooms.

Same question as above... why such a big upstairs hallway? It seems like a huge waste of space.... shift the stairs to the right and have a wider lounge. Also the upstairs toilet... wouldn’t it be better at the front of the house? (Forgetting the plumbing having to cross the house) but that would give more space to open out to the garden.
-
There appears to be a bit of space behind the plastic tray location before it would come in contact with any of the pipe work so 10mm should be fine.

@joe90 have you checked your 12v feed from the transformer?

I’m also very pleased that the new GMC board didn’t arrive and I got a refund! ? Assuming that it’s as it first appears and the board is ok. fingers crossed ?
