  1. Thanks for the reply Pete. Can I ask, is your frame skinned outside with brick / blockwork? Mine is clad with wood and tin and I intend to sit the windows within the thickness of the frame, so no differential movement.
  2. Hi Craig, thanks for the reply. I've summarised a bit. Norrsken are unable to supply and fit because of distance and the chance that remedial work would prove expensive in terms of time and travel, fair enough. They have given me the name of a fitter they recommend and I'm waiting for a price, but he is still 4 hrs away. I did mention the 7mm max deflection, and they have told me their usual fitting allowance (7.5mm all round), I am supplying the structural measurements and have asked for 10mm all round . I did ask about insulating under the steel and was told ask the fitter, fair enough the salesman isn't a fitter, I'd rather that than a made up answer. I would allow the extra 7mm between any insulation and the frame? I'd be really grateful if you could let me know how best to detail/ insulate the underside of the steel / window head junction. This problem arose because we were living in Oxon and saw and liked Norrsken at the Swindon selfbuild place, but have now moved to Dumfries and Galloway. Cheers
  3. I'm sure many of you have done this so I'm hoping you can help please. We have several 3M to 4M openings spanned by rsj's where we will be fitting either windows or in one case a lift and slide door. I have to give the final sizes to the window company butI'm not sure how to detail the underside of the steels. Presumably there should be some insulation between the steel and the frame of the aluclad windows / door? I cant find anything in the accredited details (were in Scotland). How have others detailed this please. Would say 50mm of PIR be acceptable, with the windows secured at the top through this into the bottom flange of the steel? Another question. The build is timber frame with cedar cladding to the ground floor and wriggly tin to the first floor. Because of the lead time for the windows, I would like to clad the first floor and run the reveal corner flashings into the window openings, then fit the windows inside the clad opening, probably with a compriband and foam or similar seal. Is that acceptable. Widow company (Norsken) say ask the fitter, which may well be me. I'm awaiting quotes for fitting but need to give final sizes to supplier asap. I have more questions on firestopping, but one thing at a time. Thanks
  4. I'll bear them in mind for the next round, thanks
  5. Can I ask please, did you get trade prices yourself as a selfbuilder, if so with who? I tried to spend the best part of £10K with midsummer wholesale (with further plans for more) from their easypv configurator prices, and they wouldn't give me trade prices, I was dealing with someone called Stephen.
  6. Yes, it was about £250, but I got a 5% off voucher when I initially clicked away from the website (union mart), delivered next day free. I will also rig it to the scaffolding to lift the sarking and other stuff.
  7. This is what I have just used to lift my first floor panels, some of which are over 200Kg. I decided to buy a slightly better qualikty Rhino hoist rather than an ebay one as my son was helping me and I'm keen not to kill him. The hardest part was lifting and fitting the hoist, although when we took it down we realised it could lower itself, it would have also pulled itself up!
  8. Have you had a quote from Stevenson and kelly. I got my easi joists from them, best price, responsive to questions, delivered on the stated day. 304 x 147 at 400, spanning 6.3M, 7mm deflection. Best bit was I'm too fat to fall through the gaps :-) I asked for 3 quotes, one never replied, one dried up when I started asking questions about reducing deflection (posi), the best one got the order.
  9. Thanks again everyone. I have pm'ed scottishjohn to ask for his contact.
  10. Thanks for all the replies. I agree a farmer would be by far the best option. The one I had already asked was a bit non commital as someone was killed around here a few years ago falling off the forks at an agricultural merchants, not something that would happen with this job but it has made him a bit twitchy about using it off the farm. I will try and find another farmer. Cheers.
  11. Sad I know, buty I havent got 5 pals, and I'm the wrong side of 60 and nowadays prefer to work smart rather than hard. But yes, handballing with my son is the fallback.
  12. Ah, yes, Duh! I stupidly hadn't even considered self chamfering ? Cheers.
  13. Reading various posts on here it seems like a few people have hired telehandlers to lift trusses and the like. Could I ask anyone who has hired one whether they already had, or had to undergo special training, more than the usual deliver driver giving a quick demo? I am in south west Scotland where things are a bit backward, but I can't find anywhere to hire one, or at least anyone who will reply to email enquiries, but I specifically stated in the emails that I was not formally trained. I'm aware that they have the potential to tip over, but in my case the lift is just a straight lift and boom foward from hard standing with ridiculously light load. Thanks.
  14. Sorry cant help with your specific question, but I am interested in whether people really do use chamfered battens. I know the standard details show chamfered, but have you found any easily available. I will have some vertical claddingin cedar and from what I have gathered most use bog standard roofing battens. presumably it is a bit more important in cladding with open spaces.
  15. That's great, thanks very much, I'll investigate,
  16. Hi, does anyone have any up to date real pricesfor tata cc urban (or catnic), or vieo roof. I need about 140M2 for the roof and more to go around the first floor, but not yet worked that out. Suggestions for alternatives also welcomed. I have used the online catnic calculator and it comes out at about £50/M. This seems a lot to me, it is not that different a material to the 0.7mm plastisol coated profiled steel roof I have used on some outbuildings and that was nearer £12/M. I know flashings and trims bump up the price. Has anyone got any experience of DIY installation? I'm In Dumfries and Galloway. Thanks.
  17. Thanks :-)
  18. cheers
  19. LOL, thanks. Actually I meant the engineered wood floorboards ? Although the details of the makeup are interesting.
  20. Please could I ask the details of that engineered floor, and if it's not too cheeky, the price per M, and the supplier. Really like it. Thanks.
  21. Thanks for the reply
  22. Thanks, only get an EE signal here, I'm surprised how good it is though.
  23. Glad I saw this thread. I'm in rural Dumfries and Galloway on an exchange only line and get about 3 down and 0.2 up. Today I stuck my EE phone sim in a TPlink 4g router and now get 55 down and 7 up, very happy. Am I correct in thinking that mobile companies can no longer get uppity if you use a phone sim in a data device, I can get an unlimited data phone sim for about £30 a month, I pay 28 for the slow broadband so for 2 quid I'd be gettin a much better service.
