So I thought I might buy myself a new Bluetooth speaker for my iPhone and then remembered that there was this 'thing' in the lounge that might do the job. It's a Revo Superconnect and I don't ever remember it ever being switched on even once since neither of us ever sat in the lounge. Went to retrieve it and there is no power supply and no remote . Managed to find the receipt for it and it came from John Lewis and was more than I would ever spend on what appears to just be a radio! Couldn't find a manual for it either. Anyway I looked on the Revo site and I can indeed buy a new power supply and remote but wondered if I had a power supply here that might do the trick. All it says on the Revo site is "Your SUPERCONNECT radio is supplied with a multi-region power supply, meaning that it can be operated in a number of countries around the world". Any ideas what it might need? I found an adaptor that I thought might work but when I plugged it in nothing seemed to switch on. There are also 2 separate speakers next to it but not connected but I assume that I don't need to use those with it. I am also assuming that I can use it without the remote. I took a massive crate of cables, old remotes etc to the tip a couple of weeks ago. Wonder if they were in there . So main questions are - will it act as a Bluetooth speaker for my iPhone, and what adaptor do I need for it. Thanks in advance for any help .

Shudder! What with rats under the floorboards and snakes in the garden you guys must have nerves of steel! At least your kids will grow up brave lol. Yeah well we all know what 6" is to a bloke so not buying the 2' adder story! The females grow larger so more venomous naturally

I’m sure most folk will have a different vision of a snake in a hot tub!

Sounds like you, @Onoff and I grew up within about 5 miles of each other! We used to get a few grass snakes in the school and plenty of slow worms but I think they are lizards rather than snakes. Never saw an adder. I think snakes can swim and can stay underwater for quite a while. Better check that hot tub before use each time @Onoff . Yet another hot tub hazard to worry about, especially in rural parts such as where you live. God alone knows what might take up residence in there! ?

Assume you have unlimited data? You'd like to think people won't spend their time on Skye downloading endless data but best to prepare for it.

Definitely! Most people love a welcome pack. The basics eg tea, coffee, milk, plus something like homemade cake go down well, plus some local produce, or Scottish produce at the very least. Homemade tablet maybe? And yes, don't forget the Tunnocks! Loads of info on the web about what makes a good welcome pack (and the bad ones - eg 2 teabags and 2 sachets of UHT milk lol). I don't know what the supermarket delivery situation is on Skye but that sort of info is always helpful, plus info on local restaurants, walks etc. Maybe even a little info on the build, the construction method and some in progress photos might appeal to some? Always nice to see / read something interesting about where you are staying. The place looks fabulous. It would definitely be somewhere that would appeal to me. A couple of good reviews from your first couple of visitors and that should set you up really well. Maybe some Buildhubbers will be your first guests?

NAh, @Hecateh and I thought of a few words you haven’t used. We have had a combo of red and white wine and think your reaction was entirely appropriate. Hope they catch the bar stewards!

Are Cat 5 sockets required all round the house

That’s good for a cupboard. Need something neater round the walls of the rooms. @Mr Punter‘s set up looks nice and neat. Job for @PeterW‘s little Willy probably -

Can you post a photo of how yours are finished off in your rooms please. -
My ‘corner shop’ is 8 miles away so I can’t just nip out for milk. Living on my own most food comes in packets or portions meant for 2 or more so there is generally something left over that needs to be stored in a fridge or freezer. I do agree with the don’t shop while hungry comment though although I often have a list.

They are just cables sticking out of the wall though. As per photos! And there is something like this in every room, sometimes in more than 1 place. Presumably they were meant to be finished off somehow? Not been a priority up until now but now I’m not fighting the council or freezing to death I can get on with some of the final bits and pieces. They all seem to end up cupboards downstairs. It’s one of those ‘what the hell are these’ conversations I wish I’d had (there are many of those) -
Big bucks then! How much out of interest or are they only at the concept stage just now?

I have cat cables in seemingly every room, have never used them and have no real idea what to do with them to make them look neat . -
I love pic 1 although I don’t want a horse in my back yard and I would want smart glass with all that glass and people walking by. In fact I’m not sure how living in a sort of fishbowl would work in a large-ish development sense ? There are endless steading developments a bit like pic 3 up here so that looks pretty run of the mill.

That looks idyllic! I’d probably never be able to afford one though.

If anyone is in England you can offer to send the seller some cheap booze to seal the deal!

Capital Gains Tax

No, don’t put zero. Even if you are CGT exempt in the UK it might help you where you are living if there was little profit shown on paper. Might not matter but tax regimes have a habit of moving the goalposts. So, either use what you think the market value of the property was at the time it was completed, or use your total build figure plus an estimate of the plot value at the time of completion. You paid for all of that so it’s clearly not zero. Just write a letter to state what you’ve done. And presumably you have the HMRC paperwork for the vat claim to evidence some of that? -

I had a look on the web and the overwhelming complaint from tax advisors about this form seems to be that HMRC are fining anyone who submitted the form even a day late even if no tax was due. Thus getting it back on time with a covering letter as suggested above would appear to be important leaving an appropriate lead time for it to travel from overseas. As you rightly say there should be no CGT to pay anyway. Assume if the property was jointly owned you are both completing a form? -

I tried the helpline before I submitted my VAT reclaim. Never has waiting in a queue for ages been such a waste of time. The guy barely knew what the reclaim scheme was let alone answer questions about it. Maybe I was just unlucky. -

I’m certainly not an expert so this is just how I might answer the questions. 1. Yes I would put the date that the house got its own title. 2. Put that you purchased the property assuming that you purchased the original property and weren’t gifted it. You also presumably bought all of the materials to build the new property. 3. This one is more tricky but I would put the market value of the house at the time of the split title and I imagine you will have to take a guess at that. Clearly a tax expert will know more about these forms than me but as with all these things the most important thing from HMRC’s perspective initially will be to receive the form within 30 days so I would ensure that you submit the form ASAP and send it via a recorded delivery service. Then HMRC will likely take months to do anything with it. As no tax is due it doesn’t seem worth engaging a tax expert. Your circumstances are also pretty unique. -

Plus what people say they are going to do isn't necessarily what they actually do! I think in general most people don't like development near their property unless it's a massive improvement on what's there already (and even that's a subjective view). People get used to how things are and are generally resistant to change especially if they see the changes affecting their light, views, property value, creating more traffic or whatever. -
Mine’s a Hotpoint AQM8D (not my choice). Never been serviced or loved in 9 years and the bloody thing still keeps going. Dishwasher and dryer have both gone to the kitchen in the sky in that time!

That will be irritating TBH as you MUST desire a change before then surely? . I hate my washing machine but can't really justify buying a new one until it breaks. I hope it doesn't last until 203x .
