Hmmm. Cant turn itself on when its getting dark though. Which is the most important part. At my old house i had it wired through a timer, but you spend you life adjusting the timer as the nights get longer or shorter. This surely will be the same? Im after something that once set up, looks after itself. Unless im missing the point, this wont do that. Plus i dont have a smart phone..........................................................................................

JUst had a scan through the instructions. Its not entirely clear, but i think it might just do it? I feel a phone call coming on tommorow. You are much better than me at finding this stuff! Id lost the will to live. Thanks

This ones a bit light (geddit?) on info, but the adjustment is 1 to 8 hours AFTER turn on. Which leaves it off in the morning
-
Thanks These are the closest to what i need, but sadly, it only turns the light on for 2 hours after dusk. Which in mid winter would mean its off again by 7pm. Its got PIR, but i dont really want that as the entrance to the manor next door is right past my front door. It would activate every time a car goes past. There are other similar ones i found, but they all have the same feature with the 2 hour thing

At my new Gaff, its dark. Very Dark! (at night) Under the porch is a light. Currently this is controlled from a conventional light switch inside the house. However this is not much use. What i really want is for it to come on when it gets dark, and off when it gets light. That bits easy. But i dont really want it on all night. Ideally it would go off about midnight and come on again at 6am, prior to us leaving for work. But, can i find a device that will allow that to happen? No! I can get ones that come on at dark and stay on for a preset period, but that will be no use in the morning. Surely i cant be the only person who wants to see at night AND in the morning??? At the moment, the only way i can see of doing this is a light sensitive sensor, but having to wire through a time clock as well. OK, its not the end of the world, but surely there is a device that will do this? Any of you guys found a suitable gizmo?

Can you say in what way. Curious as in the process of buying a house where this has been done and there has been a bit of a ding dong about the access.

Permitted development rights: lawful development certificate
Roger440 replied to dogman's topic in Planning Permission
But the OP hasn't built it yet. If its within the rules, i dont see why you need a certificate? Other than peace of mind maybe. The rules on outbuildings are fairly (in planning terms) simple. -

Yes, make sure its within the rules and crack on. Otherwise, you might as well just apply for planning! -
Indeed. We got a pallet of old colour stuff with a job lot of car stuff. It was like a stampede when it went on Ebay. Shame i haven't got a few containers of it!

And some, like us, have a whole heap of stock, bought prior to this. And if your stock turn is low (like ours) then it will be a while yet before the increased prices filter through. Watching the exchange rate is now my new hobby! I guessing it wll settle out around 1.38, but that might just be wishful thinking.

Holy thread resurrection! Just received a letter telling me mines obsolete and needs to be replaced! Really? It was only replaced 4 yeas ago. Doesn't actually say it HAS to be replaced, just implies it must be. I look forward to telling them to bugger off!

It was all going so well

I can well believe mortgage issues. Im just trying to get two, and the world has just gone stupid. The list of stupidity is crazy, but the latest, is that neither bank will produce a mortgage offer until the other one does!!! Wont even agree to make the offer conditional on the other one being made. Madness. And the days keep ticking by. Taken 3 weeks to decide my wifes payslips are not valid as they dont show the company name. But the bank statements do, wth the company name, for the same amounts, and has a P60 as well to back up. But apparantly she might no longer be employed by hem. Despite the monthly salary rolling in.............................. I could go on, but frankly, you couldn't make it up. Neither are saying i cant afford it. -
Plenty of guys doing exactly that over in the USA on Garage Journal forum. That said, you will be warming up a greater lump so it ll be less responsive to any adjustments you might make.

Hmmm, building control enforcement. Rears its ugly head on this house too. Based on what i have seen, the drainage is a disaster area. Simply cant be correct, but its been done anyway! On the upside, it registered!
-
Dont doubt how its done will affect it. But eventually its got to fill up the grit with dirt or moss.I remain unconvinced about its long term functionality. Same as a soakaway drain. Ulitmately gets clogged.

Fantastic website. But that paving is a nonsense. Saw some of this at a supermarket that was a couple or 3 years old. For the most part the "slots" were blocked with general dirt and crap and it was puddling on top!. 5 years down the road, this will be no better than regular paving.
-
Probably also worth saying, i did it with him, which he encouraged. Useful learning experience too!
-
It is specifically ones that discharge to water course. Discharge to soakaway/ land drain etc is unaffected. Came into force 1st Jan last year.

Exactly, but the tank looked ok. But what i know about tanks is next to bugger all, apart from what ive learnt today. Steep curve!! Accoring to the goverment page, it says if you sel your house, you HAVE to upgrade it to sewage treatment. Here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/general-binding-rules-small-sewage-discharge-to-a-surface-water But after 3 hours on interweb, i can find nothing to support this legally. Prob ought to put up a post in the right section.

Primarily just the usual stuff. Modern plaster on the walls in the old part of the house. Some modern render (part rendered) on the front wall. A bit of salt leeching from the chimney externally. However, the prime concerns (which may be linked) were, on the extension, so 8 years old, The bricks below the DPC are rather damp. The worst area is under a down pipe off the roof, that was blocked so overspilling the gutter. But its pretty much all along the back wall, but gets better the further you go from the butter. So, may be simple, or a leak underground? Cue the drainage system. Property, (and next door) has a septic tank. Old, discharging to river (licensed). However alarm bells rang when he saw the down pipe and kitchen waste share the same drain!!. There is a inspection point in the garden, roughly in line with the back of the house, which had sewage in it. The fall is near non-exsistent to the tank, not the end of the world, but if its got rainwater in it, that rather buggers it up! Try as we did, we could not find the discharge into the river though. All fixable, at a price, EXCEPT, the fact that next door, probably, is the same. ie, discharging rainwater AND sewage into the septic tank. Got the feeling this could be tricky?

Well, the good news is, once we got past the hurdle of actually getting a reply to phone or email, appointment was made and man came. Clearly knows his stuff. Found some stuff i really did need to know too. or may that should be

Neither can do over 15KG. (hermes not at all, interparcel at far higher cost than our current couriers.) 95% of our stuff is in the 20-30kg bracket. For upto 15kg, Hermes is the same price to everywhere. Sadly its double our current price, though it does come in £2 cheaper for highlands than DPD. But only 15kg. I think our problem with Parcel Farce is Milton Keynes Depot. But thats where we are! I dont think there are any easy answers. Im guessing the big boys reduce the prices in the "busy" parts of the country to compete, leaving the out lying areas exposed o higher prices.
-
I can. I use Parcel Monkey to book Parcel Farce. But they are still hopeless and lose stuff. And rarely pick up on the right day or at all. Believe me ive tried. Its just to painful and expensive replacing stuff. Most of our products are above £250.00 so gets expensive really quick. As i said, id love to have an answer, but i just dont see one outside of Royal mail and Parcel Farce. :( To be honest i struggle to see why anyone actually uses them anymore, other than they are cheap. The service is appalling, and you can certainly never get anything sorted out if it goes wrong. If i could find a way, id have the edge over other companies. We send a lot of stuff to the highlands.

Talks on how to build a 'good' house??
Roger440 replied to TheMitchells's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
But time IS money. Doing things properly takes time. Which is why nothing is done properly! -
Ahhh, the highlands and islands issue. Not sure there is a way round that. We have a contract with DPD. So using someone else is not really an option, because i dont have an account with them. So my only option is Parcel Farce or Royal Mail. Problem is, they are absolutely hopeless. (unless it will go in an envelope). The amount of stuff that goes walkabouts never to be seen again is nuts. Put simply, i cant afford to use them as im forced to send out replacements at my cost. All assuming i can even get Parcel Farce to collect, a major challenge in itself! Seriously, id love to know what to do about it. I frequently get the grumbling, especially from people in Northern Ireland. DPD lass that as an island!.
