Switchable power to every room?
SteamyTea replied to puntloos's topic in Networks, AV, Security & Automation
There is a thing called diversity, can't remember the exact formula (someone else will) but for any given circuit there is an assumption that one socket will have a full load on it, and subsequent sockets have a part load. New vacuum cleaners are currently limited to 1600 W. -
(smart?) things that should be in every room
SteamyTea replied to puntloos's topic in New House & Self Build Design
Do you really need multiple cables. Surely 1 cable and a switch/router in each room. But really, why do you need everything wired up, surely a home should be, to a certain extent, a haven from the outside world. All I would see is holes that need filling. Remote parenting. Not really how it is meant to work. It it in with the MVHR, and a light sensor may be of use. But be better off just going basic and accepting that every no wand again life is not perfect, in my opinion. -
No Condensate from MVHR?

I have wondered that too. Also, I know they claim that odour is filtered out, but is it really? Could I smoke a French Woman (Gauloises) who is cooking my curry supper without the smell getting into the bedroom? -

Plumbing threads. Just had a quick skim of the link. "energy can only be extracted not stored," Not sure I understand that. -

Shouting and friends and family is normal management surely. You know what you can say and you also know that you can apologise after, and get away with it. At work, you know that you may have a mutiny on your hands, and nothing get done, no matter how much you say sorry. -

In many cases, that is better. Uses less resources, forces people to buy a more efficient model, and many 'new' things last a very long time these days. There will always be isolated exceptions, but they are just that, exceptions. But where these things designed and built by uneducated 'practical' people, or where they created by highly skilled and educated people? -

You can have a copy of my IMI management certificate that I got in 1983 if it helps. Went to school with one, we got caught smoke once. He was barmy, just like his Dad. -

Too true, I have only worked for a couple of places that had good management. I was the production manager at one of the worse places I worked, at least when I left the staff said I had done a good job, even if the bosses did not. My Father was a member of the IMS or something similar. He had it in his mind that British Management was peerless. When I told him of some of the things that happened at the work places I was at, he just did not believe it. -

Now just think of everyone was capable of doing what you can do, that would have (expletive deleted)ed your business pretty quick. Most people lack of science education astounds me. Is it also wrong to force people into an unsuitable job, don't do anyone any favours that (I hated most of the jobs I did). I was just after the pay. It is interesting that on this forum, which is basically about practical things, other skills are not highly regarded (like Architects). While I agree that our education systems is broken, and our employment practices are not very good either, they cannot be that bad as we have a pretty strong economy in global terms, very good healthcare, a society that is pretty free from crime, safe roads, clean drinking water, a natural gas network that dos not explode, a national grid that keeps going, shops with food in them, a reliable civil service, etc etc. Now you could take any one of them, except maybe the gas and electrical girds and find a better one somewhere, but as a whole, we stand up pretty well. -

Just tell them you gave to officially employ them to get insurance cover. And they may get their dole money stopped. @joe90 @Jeremy Harris just had a conversation about skills in the workplace. How would practical skills help an 'internet influencer'. As much as I dislike all this modern nonsense, it is a living for some people. -
Not really with a properly installed one. They are not like cheap air conditioning units that hang off the side of developing world walls, or UK pubs.

Yes, it was early. Even dropping to 80 lt of 48°C (lower than a lot of people think is necessary) is not going to change the 2 kWh figure much. It is a rule of thumb only. Can get good quality data from the Met Office.

-10°C external temperature is a very rare event. The old MCS had a rule that the ASHP, without supplementary heating, should cover 99% of all heating needs. Easy to hit down here in the far South West, not so easy to hit 'up North'. If you work on 100 lt per person per day, then add 2 kWh/day.person. That should cover losses as well. The usual metric for hot water seems to be 150 lt/day.person, but if we are going to be serious about saving energy, then reducing the amount used is the easy option. Now remember that the ASHP will not do both the space heating and the DHW at the same time, so allow no more that 6 hours for water heating (fits in nicely with the E7 window). So say you have 6 people all wanting a shower, using up the full 100 lt each, then that is 600 lt and 12 kWh, so a 10 kW HP is just ticking over when spread over a few hours. You will need a very large water tank. Realistically you would use a 300 lt cylinder, but the HP is still only running twice (once in an E7 period, and once not). But I suspect that most of the time there will be less people, and less water used, and the weather will be warmer. And then the MVHR can help reduce ventilation losses (not looked at your SAP but assume it is in there, if not, work it out). Fitting PV could cover a lot of the DHW if timed/managed correctly and is probably the easy and cheap way to make a big saving.

Do you like your kitchen sink?

Because I had a once. She was disgusting. I really have no idea why I dislike them, just something deep rooted and ancient I think. And they make for less room in the sink.- 71 replies

I hate, and I mean really hate, washing up bowls. I pick them out with my fingertips and put them out of sight if I can.- 71 replies

And all in the snow as well. Worth watching all of the series, especially the stairs and roof.

Was on life support when I was there. I did speak to Patsy not so long ago, may have to track her down and see what they are all up to. -
