DonGillies
Hello all, I was wondering what peoples thoughts are on having a block skin around the whole of the timber frame kit. The way my house has been designed is that we have a 140mm Timber frame - 50mm Cavity - 100mm Block Skin - 140mm Stone at low level - 25mm larch mounted to 50mm battens that are fixed to the block work. I'm wondering if i do actually need the block work or if i can fit cladding and stone work to the kit providing i still leave a cavity.
PeterW
You’ll need to check with the TF manufacturer that the frame can take the additional load of the larch cladding but that’s a similar design to @JSHarris and the larch is attached to a set of counter-battens
Stones
Likewise the stone, no reason cannot be tied to the frame as the block wall would be (subject to you checking with the TF supplier/your SE)
selfbuildaberdeen
we are having timber frame, no brick skin 100% larch clad ?
bissoejosh
We've done a timber frame with no brick skin for part of our build and clad it with Larch, no issues and we simply provided a deep ventilated cavity to keep the water well away from the frame. scottishjohn
would it not need to be 170mm TF if no blockwork+ cavity to get same insulation value? ask your frame maker
lizzie
I have TF with Larch clad and a couple of render walls too. All on the frame no block
Russell griffiths
I think what you put around your timberframe is down to the final finish. If you want brick then use brick if you want stone then use stone if you want render, then blocks with render, not a silly board that you render onto if its timber cladding then that can be fixed direct with battens
