Russell griffiths
As the title said, I have been reading up on fixings for our cedar cladding. So stainless steel looks like the go to product, although silicon bronze is used for fixing cedar shingles, I’m afraid stainless steel will look too bright. Anybody used the silicon bronze as I’ve never really come across them. Cheers peeps.
Mr Punter
If you use stainless and set them out nicely I think the shiny finish can look good. It dulls down after a while in any case. Is this for vertical cladding?
Russell griffiths
At this moment it’s for fitting facia boards, cladding will be many months away.
PeterW
Only really seen Silicon Bronze nails and fixings used in boat building as they are more resistant to corrosion than some stainless steels (that require an element of corrosion to protect them) @JSHarris May well have used them too and have a view. Jeremy Harris
Yes, I've used silicon bronze screws in the past on boats, but not recently. I bought a shed recently that is held together with stainless nails and I have to say it looks pretty good. They took the time to make sure all the heads are in straight lines, and they don't look at all out of place. I'd say that the stainless nails aren't any more obtrusive than the galvanised ones our cladding is fixed with, TBH.
Temp
If you go for stainless it may help to know some have a special pattern stamped on the head to make them less reflective. I forget what that's called. Edit: Here just called diamond pattern.. https://millworks.co.uk/cladding-fixings/ Edited May 1, 2019 by Temp
jack
Sorry @iSelfBuild, I suspect I and another mod have accidentally deleted different duplicates of your wooden nail posting at roughly the same time, leaving you with no post at all! Please post again and I'll delete this message.
