Engineer gone AWOL…

Frustrating. 
 

Seems like my appointed engineer who has been for a site visit, quoted (contract terms signed and agreed) the desired scope and came for a design meeting with the architect with the view to complete a survey upon which the basis of his design would be formed appears to have has quite simply disappeared…

 

Not responding to calls, texts or emails for a week.

 

Not really sure why I’m posting except to vent my frustration to some people who might understand!!! We were supposed to be submitting for BR approval this side of Christmas.

Voice of reason. It’s possible. But for two weeks? With no response? Could be. If I were ill I’d call my clients it would affect a deadline for. 
 

You’re right. Maybe I should pipe down. 

 

I suppose my problem is I want to move forward and worry that it is the case that the ship has been abandoned it’s not an ideal juncture to do so timing wise for my objectives.

Maybe they are busy with other customers?  It can take a while to get design information together.  If they are a one man band they may not be able to respond to emails, texts and phone calls.  Did you get other quotes?  What does your architect think?

Yeah. I’m going to simmer down. Like I say a conduit to vent. I appreciate the different perspectives though. 
 

Architect isn’t passing comment currently. I’m not sure they’ve had any contact/feedback either though. 

 

I suppose my frustration is the lack of contact. I’d actually be happy to hear that he’s gotten waylaid and things will just take a little longer than planned!

Or they have a relative taken suddenly ill or they are being visited by their ‘black dog’ following some other trigger event or they are simply not bothering because they don’t feel like it, or any number of things.  
 

Over the decades I’ve tried really hard to curb my need to shout down the phone in case such behaviour is caused by something that is deserving of sympathy.  So I try to reserve judgement, though I do fail at times.

This is it. I’m a PM in construction. I’m used to bad news, delays, failures, damage, combinations of the above. All I ever ask is that I am told what the problem is, the impact and the preferred solution. If the preferred solution to them doesn’t work for me we explore the alternatives. 
 

I get mental health. I really do. But even with this, SOME communication is imperative because generally,  problems CAN be resolved, but not without a basic understanding of the scope of the problem which could be as simple as - apologies, don’t have the capacity to deliver X right now. If it works for you I can complete by Y.

Simple, and polite, but a lot of oeople don't seem to get the importance. 

Even a simple acknowledgement that a communication has been received or an "I'm ill / away/ busy" message helps them as well as us.

I had this recently. He was the boss so i gouldnt gomplain uiwards. Resolved it by speaking to the secretary. When she said he wasn't available I expressed how glad I was that he wasn't off ill, as he hadn't been answering any emails for weeks. Just an acknowledgement would be some relief.

I got answers that day.

Speak to anybody.

I have also worked as a PM in industrial projects, I was shocked by standards of professional behaviour I encountered in house building. Presumably it’s different with large sites and major contractors but for one off jobs like self builds, many providers just don’t care, maybe assuming they won’t get more work from us.

My appointed SE also disappeared after initial quotes, one site meeting and a preliminary schedule of works. He was also contracted to provide a PC certificate but failed to perform the first inspection. After many more attempts to contact him, I was forced to find another SE to take over.

I'm thinking that some SEs expect to work at quite a slow pace. I asked for 3 or 4 for quotes for basement design. After a couple of weeks a couple got back to me. One quote was a one liner and more or less said 'around £5K maybe' (I forget the exact figure) but without much sense of what would be delivered for that. I chose the one that actually got back to me with a somewhat thought out quote. I assumed the ones that didn't get back to me were not interested. Letting the others know, one said 'oh, I didn't think you were in much of a rush, so I haven't replied yet'.

 

So, could just be that your expectations are very different from their expectations.

I get frustrated in my day job about professionalism… here was me hoping it would be different when it’s a bit more up close and personal!  I’m now reminded of a time earlier in my career when I did a few Barn conversions… time heals all wounds. A reminder that the current job is always “the worst” and one has a tendency to look back with rose tinted spectacles!
