That will offset China's New 70GW plants built in 2023.... AT least we in the UK can feel smug that were clean while half the population can choose to  freeze or starve to death.

Good job they never installed the 300 GW of renewables then, that alone would have powered the UK 4 times over.

Oh hang on.

And once cheap grid-scale batteries are available, they'll install those (no nimbys to slow them down), and their renewables will really come into their own.

Seems like they have a balanced view on energy security rather than a blinkered race to net zero of which the UK, blinded by a belief they can actually make a meaningful difference whilst bankrupting the masses of it's own citizens to pay for the privilege.

Surely its better to mothball until our capacity is better

If there was a capacity problem I imagine it wouldn't be closed, but who would pay the owners to keep it mothballed? Apart the costs of maintaining it in working condition, together with a trained workforce, you'd also need stop the redevelopment of the coal docks (or open new docks) at Immingham then mothball them too.

What's going on with Japan?

At a guess, they still have a shortfall in alternatives after loosing & taking nuclear plants off-line with the Fukushima disaster?
