Anyone built themselves an outdoor sauna

It's more down to whether the kit comes with pre-fabricated panels like cheap sheds.

Here are some good examples available off the shelf from a company that started just up the road from where we had a summer house in Sweden when I was a kid.

https://www.polhus.co.uk/sauna

I had come across that site as part of my searches, but didn’t think any of their Saunas were built with insulated cavities, so your post has me a bit confused now, as I thought you were advocating the use of an insulated cavity.

I would have thought the insulating properties of 38mm or 44mm thick logs would have been sufficient for the short periods of use. As steamy says log cabins for outside use. (And they look good).

Let's have a sense-check, eh?

This type of 'luxury toy' is for sporadic use, a bit like my 5.5L V8 AMG. I don't get into that thinking...."ooh, if I take my time I'll get 23mpg", so the same applies to your luxury, pamper-station. Just accept that it costs X amount to 'enjoy' and so be it. Think of how much you will save vs spa membership etc, plus travel to & from, and then just make it comfortable and enjoyable and switch off.

This is not a rehearsal, we're here once and then it's 'adios' (which is why I didn't focus on MPG), so unless you use this every day for hours and hours on end (which I don't think you can healthily do with such a toy) then just suck it up?

I am typing this from my un-insulated man-shed / office, with 4kW of fan heaters wafting warm air around. They heated this space almost instantly, do the job wonderfully for next to feck all, and when I'm done I just switch them off until I need them next.

Simple, effective, convenient, "job done".

Quick garden.co.uk. Is where I got my log garage and they do bespoke builds, design what you want and let them give you a quote.

Prior to my OP on this, this was pretty much my view. But one of the responses got me thinking and I’m now thinking insulation will mitigate condensation risk affecting comfort or longevity of the sauna. Or will any condensation just be dried off pretty quickly by the heat?

It will.

Saunas drop the RH to about 20% or less.  You can always run them hotter, for a laugh we used to get the one in the show room up to 110°C and then see how long we could stay in it.  You don't want to put any water on the coals at those temperatures.

Personally, I've chosen to go the route of an IR sauna that just gets delivered as a self assembly pod that you can plug into a standard wall socket and will be just next to a shower room.

Not wishing to derail this thread of sauna-porn (those Polhus ones, phwoar) but how do you find using an IR sauna? It sounds more practical, and hopefully easier on the wallet too.

Only if you use it as a dry sauna, which is not the usual way to use them as you'll usually be tipping spoons full of water onto the hot coals. Dry saunas aren't very nice in my view and the wave of heat when you pour the water on is one of the best bits!

...don't have a sauna and steam room? :D

Well, it's a bit like having that 3 tonne V8 of yours and upgrading it to a 4 tonnes EV SUV just to drive around Chelsea and drag race the Ferraris in front of Harrods? Saves the planet just a tad 😁

I still wouldn't convert an uninsulated shed into an outdoor sauna without insulating and pannelling the inside.

If using a panel shed as your base. But I did say:

"If you had say 38mm slotted timbers to make the building, it might be a different matter entirely."

With the Polhus designs once stacked, the timbers are bolted at each corner to press them together to prevent drafts. And 44mm will be fine.

You should have seen our electricity bill for heating our garden office that is insulated and used by my wife for work - it cost £1600 the winter before last and before I could move here into the house!

I'll tell you when it arrives and is plugged in - I'm not allowed to get it yet....must do more hard labour to deserve it 😉

No you haven’t . You’ll know when you have gone “ too far “ because you’ll get one of these and a temporary ban .

Well !

It was a week . During that time I turned to celibacy , no alcohol , no interactions , no internet . I wandered the hills day and night looking for a meaning, a purpose .

On the seventh day I had an affinity . A voice spoke to me …

” You do not need buildhub “ it bellowed.

”You can survive and prosper without it “

I let that realisation sink in .

I wept at the thought of freedom from the confines of the forum .

Time would be my slave . I could do what I wanted . I could prosper !

But then the voice spoke once more with the immortal words I shall never forget …

” But ! ; BuildHub needs you !!!! “

So ! My destiny is to haunt these feeble threads . Ambition is to of course become a full time moderator. It’s inevitable……

I'm so glad to hear what must have felt like eternal solitude resulted in such deep enlightenment. I obviously can't speak from any experience of how this must have been for you, as I have yet merely experienced the deep shame that comes from a public shaming by @Russell griffiths that a question is just 'silly' which I'm sure pales into insignificance compaired to your brutal treatment!

All questions are silly , because they all have answers .

All answers are silly because they all have questions .

You obviously can tell how enlightened and righteous I am now …

Wow, yes! Why has your transformation not been recognised with moderating power?

The powers that be don't like change. Set in their old ways. Any challenge to their ruling and authority is met with anger and blood thirsty backlash!

I've only just realised that users can set 'polls' - I think we need a poll on whether I should be a mod. I know I can count on your vote.
