£70,000 in grants for a heat pump.....

£70,000 in grants for a heat pump - but it still saved us NOTHING... and it's so chilly our daughter keeps her coat on indoors.
The Roche family now question their decision to have the heating system installed in their detached four-bedroom home, situated in the village of North Luffenham in Rutland:-

Here is a comment from the article, sums it up.

Clearly their system was poorly designed. If heat pump technology is as bad as they say it simply wouldn't exist. Using heat pumps we can reduce our heating energy demand by 75%. I've worked on 100's of successful installs. We need more qualified engineers in the country. End of. They work.

Lots of naysayers will jump on these stories for reasons I don't really understand.

I think others on BH have pointed out that the grant value often disappears in the extra costs of an  'approved installer' who has more costs than the local specialist. ie the grant does not benefit the end user.

I know of many failures of ground source systems, and it was down to being inappropriate and badly installed.

What chance that this 'story' could be resolved by some expert attention?

There will be lots more stories like this and I have already predicted this will be the next miss selling scandal.

Heat pumps work fine in the right circumstances and when designed correctly, but what this shows AGAIN is you can't just slap a heat pump in an old leaky house and expect it to work and heat the house cheaply.  The government are missing the point by a country mile by just thinking swap all boilers for heat pumps and the problem is solved. They are totally missing the point that some drastic improvement has to be made to much of the UK housing stock to better insulate and make air tight etc to reduce the energy need, Only then can you think of a heat pump as a heating source.

Lots more of this to come I am afraid.  and I write this as a satisfied heat pump user.

If we are going to pick holes in journalism, this is the bit that got me

'Air source heat pumps are the noisiest as they have boxes fitted on the outside of the house that whirl around like an air conditioning unit. The noise is constant and if windows are open they can keep you and even the neighbours awake.'

I much prefer to have the noise outside the house, the alternative is have it inside. How would that be better?  You don't have windows open when the heating is on and we don't have heating on at night.  The noise is NOT constant like any heat source it makes a noise when there is a call for heat, which is not all the time.

I think everyone can see we need many more, and better trained, installers for heat pumps to be a success.

But other than paying a premium price for the installs in the short term, subsidised by government, are there any practical suggestions how to make up this shortfall?
