joe90
Oops, was it a builder or a DIY job?
ProDave
Well since the chimney has gone, no need for the chimney breast. could be a little more "complicated" if it was a shared chimney on a party wall.

ToughButterCup
I have ( well, had, we don't have a chimney now) a horror of something like this happening to us. Ever since I went to Glasgow and looked at the exhibition of how the Gorbals (and surrounding areas) were 'upgraded' . In part because of the way that chimney heads were blown off by a storm and killed about a score of people. If you look at the chimneys now - they are massive things - they nearly all have metal stays. This is the most accessible link I could find
Temp
Would be interesting to see inside. I wonder if the stack went through the floor as well.
markc
DIY programmes ... lets just remove the chimney breast to make more space. Im sure there are loads of people that just dont realise the chimney on the roof is sat on the thing they are just going to remove. I've seen chimneys held up with a piece of ply to make bedrooms larger.
