  1. I'm trying to find out what insulation options on a solid walls I have and which ill choose so advise or suggestion's insight in any way would be welcome i have been told they are grants for this work this could even be a factor when making my choice
  2. Hi all I'm about to put in a concrete pad for an external water tank that will weigh 3 tons when full. This will be the biggest concrete job I've tackled and I'd appreciate your input please. The top soil has been dug away and the pad will sit on the surface of very heavy clay sub soil (currently also supporting the foundations of our self-build house). Dimensions of the pad are 2700mm square and 125mm thick. A C40 mix seems to be best for septic tanks so I'm assuming the same for this. I'll be mixing it myself, and I plan to add grid rebar. My questions are: 1. should I put down membrane and gravel layer first? If so, can I use a random mix of rocks and stones (we have plenty on site)? 2. there's currently a layer of soupy churned up clay on the surface, is it best to remove this first? 3. I've found variations online for a C40 mix, can anyone tell me the correct mix? 4. If necessary could I pour the slab in two sittings? TIA, any other suggestions welcome.
  3. Along with @HerbJ here , I messed up on external window sill widths. So I need some. And since financial pips are squeaking, I thought I'd make some. How far either side of the window's structural opening should the sill extend?
  4. Has anyone done this? My sprayer (Wagner Project Pro 119 - a 720W, 200 bar, powerful machine) says nothing in the manual, but some "details" seem to insert an extra "and exterior" here, which is not in the manual: "Lacquers and glazes containing water and solvents. Lacquers, oils, solvents, solvent, PVC lacquers, pre-lacquers, primers, fillers and anti-corrosion paints. Interior and exterior dispersion and emulsion paints. Also suitable for many types of thicker paint.". Spraying the inside at the correct time can save days and days. Is this a similar opportunity? Ferdinand
  5. Following on from @lizzie's topic on external roller blinds, I've been wondering about the best way to run the power source to these. There will be 2, both on the south side of the house, one upstairs (south east corner) and one ground floor (south west corner) but both on the same face. I had a quick chat with MBC and it's a choice between something coming from under the slab, then wired along the outside of the building under the cladding, or penetrate the wall and use grommets and seal before the insulation goes in. I'm also wondering whether I need any external power points. There will be some in the garage, but nothing on the south side. I'm not sure what I would use these for, but that doesn't mean I won't want or need any at some point in the future. Any thoughts, anyone?
  6. I would like to re-design outside lighting. At present I have 4 separate PIR LED wall lights, the stainless steel up-and-down tube type a flood further away. Also some manual switched flush led lights over the front door I would like the front door ones to switch on automatically at dusk and off at midnight, or if this is too challenging, then stay on all night. One of the wall lights on a narrow path alongside the house has a c.150deg catchment, so one is past it before it wakes up to one's presence. Needs adapting with a separate Spectra200 detector perhaps. Please advise if this is best strategy and recommendations for specific kit required. Thanks
  7. We plan to have the ground floor walls of the new build clad with some sort of stone cladding (TerryE, I've been reading your blog notes on this with interest) and I'm favouring one that comes in an interlocking z shape tile format at the moment. Although there is a supplier local to me, I'm having difficulty locating alternatives so that I can compare prices. I think the local guy is reasonable, but that's just in comparison to loose stone cladding that doesn't come in tile format. The tile type is appealing as, I'm guessing, it will take less labour to attach to the building and less (if any) mortar. Can anyone suggest any suppliers?
  8. Can anyone give me suggestions for covering the rust showing on the corners of our front porch, in the render? I plan to give it a coat of white paint to freshen it up but assume if I just paint over the rust, it will soon show up. Its on most of the corners both at the front of the hosue on the porch and at the back on the kitchen extension. I wondered about Hammerite as better it has a slightly different shade of white than the rust. Or could I then paint over it?
