New build design - thoughts welcome!
Kelvin replied to AppleDown's topic in New House & Self Build Design
We had a load of sheeting on the farm so I made up some gable corners to check the headroom. Because we made the dormer bigger all in one side of the roof I was worried we’d end up with a room that wasn’t very useable. It’s not a bedroom in our use but designed so it could be in the future. We’ll use it as a dressing room with built in drawers and wardrobe to maximise space in our bedroom. -
New build design - thoughts welcome!
Kelvin replied to AppleDown's topic in New House & Self Build Design
Why have you gone for this specific shape? Is it to maximise space or is just for design and the look. As everyone is saying complex shapes, multiple corners, complex roof angles, valleys etc adds significant cost and time. Simple boxes and rectangles might be less interesting shapes but they are cheaper to build and often cheaper to run. -
ashp ASHP - how much ???!!???
Kelvin replied to Robert Clark's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
Ours is £11k design, installed, etc. which I thought was a touch dear. So yes that’s dear. The actual cost to us is about £2k though as in Scotland we get a grant to fit ASHP of £7500 plus another £1500 for the rural uplift. -

As much as many Americans think they live under a dome they don’t live in a bubble. Climate change is having a massive impact on the US from coast to coast. -

You’re splitting hairs as you could apply that general principle to other energy sources. To turn the sun’s energy requires significant investment so it’s not free. We don’t utilise the sun’s energy to the extent we could do anywhere largely due to politics and the energy cartels. -

The habitable parts of the World could accommodate those people. It’s just that ‘we’ don’t want them. Only 6% of the UK is built on for example. Clearly that doesn’t mean 94% could be built on for obvious reasons. In any event those countries could better cope and develop their countries but their Governments repeatedly fail them and the richer countries repeatedly exploit them. We don’t have abundant free energy. We have energy controlled ostensibly by cartels and many billions in energy poverty. Delivery isn’t an issue either. We easily distribute it today around the rich countries. Same with most resources. Bottled water is a great example of this. Look at how much is consumed in the UK for example when we have perfectly good drinking water. -

Except it’s not. It’s the imbalance of consumption. Look how much more your average American consumes compared to just about every other country. If resources were more evenly distributed the planet could support more people. The good news is the rate of population growth is slowing down. The bad news is that doesn’t support a continually growing GDP model. We need to invent matter replicators and abundant free energy. Do away with capitalism and develop a one World Government led by science. -
If you all you want is a basic rectangular form then investigate all the timber kit companies standard designs. The longhouse/barn style is exactly that and a very common design. No need for an architect, definitely not at x% of build cost anyway.

Maybe so but disinformation and the sky is falling in newspaper headlines isn’t a new phenomenon either. -
Communication is definitely an art. Doing it via letters from a solicitor rarely works. The art in it is to always be shifting your tone words body language to match/mirror the other person, identify their primary concern, determine if it’s reasonable and come up with a mitigation. In your case I’d tell them to eff off. Show them your agreed planning consent and party wall agreement. Get on with your extension. Down the line your neighbour might soften or move or become more of an arse. Deal with that then.

You’ll have women saying it’s too cold and men saying it’s too but on a Global scale. -
Well our foundation and steels were mm perfect to fit the kit. The kit erection team told me it’s rare and they reckon it’s gained them a day as normally they’d be adjusting everything to fit. They have a guy welding the steels up on another job at the moment. The only dimension issue they’ve had is with one of the panels which was easy enough to fix.

Yeah I don’t understand it either. It seems to be on a continuum that ends up at chem trails and flat earth. -
Commencement before New Building Regulations re-submission?
Kelvin replied to Deejay_2's topic in Building Regulations
Has the BCO told you that you need to dig the actual trench for an elevation of the house or can you do what’s been suggested above and simply dig a trench somewhere near (but not where you are actually building) show them the open trench and fill it back after. In my case forming the site access and about 5m of drive seemed to be enough to start commencement. I didn’t think it was but BCO was happy enough. -

The anti renewables groups tend to be right wing so it’s become very political over the last ten years or so. Especially in the US. -

I disagree. Humans, historically, and naturally tend to do little or not enough until we absolutely have to. Then we throw everything at it and quite often solve it. Hence the phrase necessity being the mother of invention. That’s not so easy with climate change. Also these very edge based targets are set full in the knowledge we won’t hit them but will do better than we otherwise would have done had the target been lower. China is apparently building more wind turbines that the rest of the World combined. A lot of that is driven by their polluted smog ridden factory cities. -

Regardless of what you choose to believe consider what if our activity really is having an impact why wouldn’t we err on the side of caution and take reasonable steps to reduce the impact. Cutting consumption and waste and being more sustainable in all areas of life just seems to make sense to me. Ultimately it matters not as if climate change wipes us out the Earth will likely recover despite us and would be better off without us. -
Yes we had this at our previous house. Some trees had TPOs on them others didn’t. When I contacted the council about it they said exactly that. We had a load of trees up the drive that were near the end of their life due to poor care from years before. However, they were becoming dangerous and a few had been blown down. I had to get permission to take the worst of them down and none had TPOs.
