Hot outside but darn cold inside - PV direct to heater?
readiescards replied to readiescards's topic in Photovoltaics (PV)
Sorted a £6 150W car fan heater and a few old batteries. Nicely balanced at 12 Amp in and 13Amp out (when its sunny) (Though 12A @ 12V is only 144W so long way down on the 285W the panels are supposed to generated - assuming input current measured at 12V and not the open circuit 37V) -
So the plastering of the first floor reveals around the stair hole can proceed, I have had to remove the temporary first floor corner posts and handrails. The final stairs and handrail will not be fitted for a couple of weeks. So what H&S protection can I put in place please?

Renting an anemometer

Will soon need to balance my system. Did the cheap little airflow meters help? -
Any recommendations for a suitable tool/device to purchase to monitor my ufh screed dryness? Thanks Paul

Hot outside but darn cold inside - PV direct to heater?
readiescards replied to readiescards's topic in Photovoltaics (PV)
Sorry I forgot to say this is just a temporary solution and therefore I want to keep expenditure to the very minimum but will rig up something using some second hand car batteries and a cheap as chip inverter. Given it appears the little heater will blow up. -

Thanks for the tin cans suggestions, which has made me think of some more ideas including ramming some black plastic pipe behind the solar PV panels and to push air through into the office space. However back to the question While I understand this. I suppose my question is can I treat the solar PV panel as a simple 40V dc battery? i.e. I mustn't short the connections but otherwise I can pretty much do what I want Or are there any additional considerations I must consider to ensure there is no damage to the panel? -

Sadly no plans for an immersun. Pop can solar thermal v interesting though ive no source for many cans. Have been thinking of a black bin bag with a length of plastic pipe running through it as my first solar gatherer -
My build is progressing and I'm now able to do the day job (software dev) from my insulated office garage powered by 4 of my 30 solar panels, some second hand batteries and some cheap charge controllers and inverters - magic and all good :-) But the insulation and solar panels means I'm getting no thermal gain so while it is very sunny outside it is only 12.5deg C in my office! Question can I connect my currently unused 285W solar PV panels DIRECT to a heating element such as: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/262902796592 or something else just to get some (any!) heat into the office space without resorting to running a diesel generator?

Spray foam under room in roof floorboards - expensive option?
readiescards replied to readiescards's topic in Heat Insulation
Got rid of my offcuts :-) Offered it for free on Facebook and guy came and the bags away to use for stuffing targets for shooting practice. Ideal use I reckon. Though going to be a big mess to tidy up I think. -
clearfox Eating worm monster arrived
readiescards replied to readiescards's topic in Waste & Sewerage
This is the redundant 'thorttle' - supplied by Clearfox but not used when the Graf baffle tank is supplied - disappointingly no instructions to tell me that. It will now be this week's bath toy for me 5 year old boy - saves raiding the recycling box for new bath toys! -

The cost of installation has risen considerably as I had not realised just how much gravel was going to be needed - as we went with one big hole rather than two separate holes to get the tanks close together. (min separation is 5ft) plus the drain to the water course also needs lots of gravel - which helps to ensure the hole never files with water (since the Clearfox is basically a empty plastic box likely to float out of the ground if the hole filled with water) -

After an initial hiccup (I got the first tank put in backwards - very poor documentation and no-one available to contact at SepticTanks.co.uk or Graf UK) the tanks are in thanks to the landscape guys big digger. -

Automatic curtain opener recommendations?
readiescards replied to readiescards's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I'm trying to achieve a real sunrise alarm but don't want to me woken up by a buzzy motor wirring away. I doubt the misses will convert to roman blinds or roller blinds but will put it to her. Thanks for the ebay links too. Also looking for something that uses an existing curtain pole as the primary curtain support. I used a couple of pulleys last time and the existing curtain track. -
35 years ago, aged 14, I rejigged the gearbox of a Landrover window wiper to run continuously and bolted it to my bedroom wall and via an adapted Hornby train controller could open (but not close for some reason) my curtains from my bed. Just wondering if automatic curtain openers have moved on since and if there are any recommendations - needs to be: * mega quiet * automate-able * electric or compressed air (not so keen on steam power or hydraulics) thanks

Spray foam under room in roof floorboards - expensive option?
readiescards replied to readiescards's topic in Heat Insulation
I can't directly answer that question as the whole spray foam was installed at the same time and sound proofness of the whole house improved substantially - reducing the sound of the wind and rain outside and softening the internal echos. Much better. Last bit of posijoist installation goes in mid-April and I'm hoping for a reduction of interfloor sound transmission but given there is not much noise around at the moment it will be hard to gauge the amount. -
Why are my LED flood lights semi-illuminated when off?
readiescards replied to readiescards's topic in Lighting
Ive order a Victron inverter as replacement for this Chinese one. The Victron coming with an earth and shutters on the socket. So hopefully a safer solution all round- 29 replies

For the LDC50 foam they quote: Fire rating according to ATE n°08/0018 EN 13501-1 Behind a 12mm gypsum board: B s1 d0 I'm not sure what B s1 d0 means though! -

We ditched the home phone number when moving into temp accommodation and have no intention of getting another. WhatsApp audio calls for personal and a Zoiper app for a business VoIP line via Gradwell. Not missing the home phone line at all. and assuming I can get a reliable 3G some how to my new build (unfortunately Vodafone very unreliable around here) then we will stick with the above
