  1. this is normal. I keep meaning to ask if there were any 'good' versions of these yet. I assume not. I need to replace 2 double sockets as they are clogged up with dust and crap and I cannot strip them down. But I need satin/brushed metal items.
  2. I don't know how but I've found whatever clearance was needed. Although first time I forgot to fit the skirting and the second time I forgot the skirting grab adhesive... It's so tight I've had to put an ad hoc V-groove in the 15mm thick skirting to clear the pipe. Obviously I've made the connections loosely but not tightened them or opened the valves. The boiler will have a fit and need bleeding and filling and all sorts. A job for a less cold night.
  3. I'm just going to **** it (the brackets) with a big hammer until it all fits
  4. Yes, I put the brass caps on to stop muck getting in there. And prevent the minuscule risk the trv would open of its own accord even when set
  5. Why would I take the valves off? There would be water everywhere ?. They go straight in the bottom of the rad. anyway, surprised you haven't said ditch the boring radiator and make something out of copper pipe and elbows
  6. Yes - its not a new install, the radiator had to be unplumbed and taken off the wall so that it could be re-built and re-plastered. As shown here The heating is in operation for the rest of the house. It wouldn't even need an 'S'. you could just angle it away from the wall. But as above its 15mm pipe, there's very little length there to use as a lever (and I be worried about stressing the elbows) and I don't want to take the valves off myself.
  7. Well that ain't happening, for about a million reasons. I'll have to chase the new plaster back to brick and pack out to the correct depth with some wood. Add it to the ever increasing snagging list and never do anything about it.
  8. You could but I'd need a plumber for that and there's not much of a lever to bend that 15mm tail. Likewise I don't want anyone to be lifting the (new) floor to meddle with any piping.
  9. No, that is on the short side and not 15mm of flex in those connections and the TRV tail is up against the joist any way. This is a normal house so the heating runs at 60+ degrees and I Don't really want to touch the plumbing unless I can help it.
  10. Took radiator off the wall for it to be repaired and re-plastered. The dot and dab plaster is thicker than before. The radiator plumbing connections should be 45-50mm from the wall but the tails sticking out the floor are only 30mm from the wall. Short of calling a plumber, is there any trick other than chasing the brackets into the wall?
  11. I have just signed up for a platinum everyday card (or whatever it is called). Just the one to start with. although you sound an ideal source of matched betting gnomes ?
  12. The same people who pay for your 'free' banking service. everybody else.
  13. Just seen a comment on GBF about typical homes requiring 150kWh/m2/year and building regs requiring <52kWh/m2/year. Jun 15 to Jun 16, gas consumption was 12.4kWh so were at about 95kWh for heating and hot water. I'll see how that settles down as we finish some improvements (insulation) and settle into more of a home routine.
  14. Interesting. Still doesn't account for accidents/forgetfulness. Is there an obvious failure mode for 1/4 turn cartridges allowing a flow even though a tap in nominally closed?
  15. I like to live dangerously
  16. We've been looking for a new supply. In all the upheaval, I have no records of any sort and only have the current supplier records to go on. Which I don't think are worth much because we have not had an extended period of normal living in the house. Even so, usage seems to have been about approx. 60%/40% Elec/Gas in the period of June 15 to June 16 which is when the major building work was done, whilst we lived in the house. Total cost over that period was £1100 which I surprised by. thought it would have been higher. However I'm surprised by how little gas we've used - Gas fire, Combi Boiler for DHW and CH compared to electricity, cooking, washing, tumble dryer, lights and other appliances. Suspect the washing machine and dryer are chewing up a considerable amount of that although the double single ovens probably don't help. The induction hob, although massive is supposed to be an efficient method of cooking. I really need to be measuring stuff to establish what the problems are.
  17. I've just signed up to some random energy company I've never heard of on the basis they are the cheapest from the comparison site. I expect them to go bust next... Ec0n0my 3n3rgy for what its worth (replace numbers with correct letters)
  18. Thanks that's good to know. I'm not doing this imminently but the cables themselves will soon be inaccessible. So so if I just make a small hole in the ceiling and poke a loop of 3&E through it for now, it will be ok?
  19. Not something I've got around to yet... And we've not a wet room just tiled floor and walls but my tiler tiled and grouted up to the edge of the door casing. To be fair it's no scruffier than the rest of the tiling. Therefore I am tempted to just paint the casing and do away with having an additional architrave. YMMV.
  20. When wiring the alarms in this fashion: https://www.aico.co.uk/technical-support/basic-wiring-diagrams/ Does one use junction boxes with a spur to each alarm or can you run 2 cables into each terminal in the base and forego any other joint/junction paraphernalia?
