Stage 1 Is Very Nearly Complete :)
Barney12 replied to Construction Channel's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Ditto! Two desserts!! -
This just gets more confusing! I thought the whole concept of a UVC was that the pressure remained constant with mains pressure. Its certainly the case with the small (100ltr) Aquapoint un-vented cylinder we have in the flat, there is absolutely no noticeable drop in pressure at the hot tap.

"I'm dying Faye" "really?" (In the unconcerned voice ever!) LMAO! Mine would have added "remind me again where you keep the cheque book" -
I've seen those Brixky's demonstrated at a few shows and it always looks impressive. Has anyone actually used one in anger? im hopeless at blockwork/brickwork

That looks nothing like the handles on the 99p buckets I buy from Jewson's

Cars can be tricky, lots of curves and often not flat glass. Architectural flat glass is much simpler. Modern films are applied onto wet glass so positioning and moving is relatively simple. SUPER clean glass is a must as trapped dust/dirt looks rubbish. Probably the hardest part is trimming is neatly to the frame and/or gasket. But, with care a steady hand a super sharp scalpel, far from impossible. Oh and many commercial installers aren't that good either! My Defender was tinted by the dealer THREE times and in the end they gave me my money back. Shocking. The favorite 'pro bodge' is to use a sharpie marker to hide a poor trimming!

Hi Dave We were in exactly the same position 2 years ago. We went down what I describe as "the reluctant landlord" route. In some ways we were fortunate as planning and ecology severely delayed (and still is delaying) our build but we also had a reasonably comfortable 1 bed flat above the garage at our plot which we can live in. In my view renting just doesn't add up and don't underestimate what a complete PITA a tenant can be. Let alone all the regulation and now the poorer tax breaks too. 2 years on we are incredibly fortunate that we still have same tenant but we now really need to release the cash. Last time we failed at selling the property, this time we will give notice to the tenant (2 months, assuming he actually leaves and doesn't cause issues), probably 2 months to decorate etc (and yes as they say they don't respect your property like you do). So our plan is probably to serve the notice around Nov and have the property on the market for the spring of 2017. What two years of being a "reluctant landlords" does so is make you realize every property will sell at a certain price. We believed and were advised (wrongly) what that price was. This time we are philosophical and will price it to sell. Its going to hurt like hell. But...............that's life! ..............and don't get me started on Estate Agents! Otherwise this thread will be full of **!*!*!*!*!*! words!

Other than curtains and blinds I don't think so. Flat glass film is really not hard to fit* so you could consider DIY. It might even pay to go on a course for a day. EDIT: *Provided you don't have huge expanses of glass.

Thanks Jeremy. Your post shows exactly why to the average layman this whole area is a minefield and why us laymen are open to so much manipulation by snake oil salesmen! You logic and reading similar posts is where I got my original logic from.

I share your pain!

Yep, ok got it. Newbie questions comming.............. so will a TS be just as efficient at transferring its heat into the flowing water at low temperatures. I don't know why but my brain thought that a TS would need to be at a reasonably high temp to allow efficient transfer? I assume dual coil rather than some form of s plan configuration between UFH and DHW demand?
-
OK, so I'm getting close to really needing to decide on my proposed system for heating and DHW. ignoring all the calcs for a second but broad brush; passive house standard, 2,5000sq feet, 3 bed, 2 bath, 2 adults no children. So, I think where I am is something fairly simple: Underfloor heating ASHP 250/300ltr hot water cylinder (unvented) Electric Immmersion Sunamp The idea being: The ASHP will heat the floor as required. The ASHP will pre-heat the water tank to a level which is cop efficient. The sunamp will 'top up' on demand DHW to the required temp. The electric immersion will provide the weekly legionella heat up cycle. The sunamp will be powered (where possible) using diverted power generated from our off grid PV. The rest of the time by off peak electric. Does this sound sensible?

PV Panels: Black with Silver Solder Lines OR All Black
Barney12 replied to Barney12's topic in Photovoltaics (PV)
Right I've gone with the all black Interenergy units. Got a great price and service from Wagner Renewables. Will post some more info once it's all arrived and we've got it up on the roof! -
Colour experts? Trying to match cedar with a RAL code
Barney12 replied to oranjeboom's topic in Doors & Door Frames
Go for a neutral tone. Probably safest to go with grey. RAL9007 tends to be the defacto grey powdercoat colour. -
It's an interesting point and one not covered in any of our reports or mitigation strategy documentation. My ecologist has mentioned in passing a couple of times that she likes to visit newly established roosts unannounced whilst "in the area". But without specific provision to do so I fear getting past my planned electric gates my be an issue.

These are pretty standard on new builds these days. IMHO they look awful and the big developers don't always manage to hide them behind the radiator, let alone put them on level or central! BODGE! (My 2ps worth!, sorry!)

I'm having the exact same dilemma. Seems almost impossible to distinguish between them. One supplier is recommending the Emphase micro inverters but now has asked if my sparky has a 'Enphase Envoy' for commissioning. Looking at the website I can't even work out what the hell that is! Another email/phone call. Solar PV is a right ball ache

Single Phase Generation Meter - How many do I need?
Barney12 replied to Barney12's topic in Photovoltaics (PV)
I thought that would be the case. It's not going to be a FiT install so the meters are mainly for self interest -
So my PV install (when eventually finished) will have three separate arrays. Each one going to a distinct consumer unit (House, Workshop, Outbuilding). All these CU are fed from one DNO via SP&N switches. So...............Do I need a generation meter for each array OR can I connect the generation meter between the SP&N's and the DNO Meter?

Very good question. I have yet to cut the letterbox sized "flight path window" in the North East gable end. It then gets covered by a dummy bird box which is open at the bottom. It often rains sideways and upwards here so no doubt will make for a nice water ingress/damp issue! Liking the stencil idea! I may even do it just to wind up the ecologist!!
-
Here is the ceiling. I deliberated for ages about whether to make it temporary so it could come down in the future but in the end decided to make it permanent. 6x2's with 18mm OSB. Then 50mm of jablite between the joists. There is 1.8m of height in the loft area which was what was specified by the ecologists. Whatever they might say it's going to get filled with 'stuff' at some point. Hence the nice big loft hatch. :D.

We have a few different species up here. The biggest roosting in our property is a Serotine. 300-400mm wingspan and a face like a bulldog chewing a wasp The little pips are quite cute though. Hang on what am I saying, they're not cute they're delaying my build thus I must despise them! Crikey I'm going soft! Anyway another productive weekend building their new home. Rear lean too and side cloche style storage now finished and clad. still so much to do though but it's keeping me busy whilst the ecologists finds reasons to invoice

What is it with women and desserts? Mine pulls exactly the same face if she doesn't get to see the dessert board -
That's for the replies guys. Dave, is it a two man job because of the weight of the stuff or just that is easier to locate/position each peice if there is someone at each end?
