Hey all, My architect specified larch. I'm less than sure - it doesn't seem that durable (5 -> 10 years). What's the "best" cladding? by that I mean last the longest and require little or no maintenance? My architect tends to add sometimes 'pretty' features (like timber framed windows); but doesn't think of the practicalness or maintenance - I guess he likes timber Cheers

Bit like being in the pub here sometimes

I'm going to put my neck right under the guillotine here and say that this is an issue for most females (waits for blade to fall). It needs to be 'real' for them to understand - which is difficult when it doesn't exist. I'll get my hat now - I assume all the female self builders are about to hunt me down ........

Yeah my misses can't visualise at all - though she says she can. On the other hand I can see the exact thing in my minds eye even before a shovel went in the ground. In a previous life I use to write computer games for a living so starting off with a blank screen and then 18 months later a near finished product ; you need to see ahead to the finish line. If though I tell her I can visualise the finished house she takes that as I am dictating what the colour of the kitchen, tiles etc. etc. etc. etc. would be (which I'm not of course!). it's been made clear it's OUR house - even though I fought for planning , I build it, I pay for it ...... but it is OURS!

Yep; they look suitable smart aswell! Price; well if you have to ask you can't afford it (which I probably can't!)
-
Has to be a down extractor though
-
I see Miele do one - looks beautiful and a price to match. One issue is the max extractor vent length is 4m. My kitchen hob will be on an island and is below ground so 4m is way to short :-((((((

I will visit them and the quality does seem fantastic. But yes I assume you install them pretty much when all the decoration is done.

SHMBO loves these : http://www.deuren.co.uk/pre-hung-door-sets?gclid=CK-G3-PPktUCFWUq0wodzEYFgA They do look great but have a price tag to match! Are these kits that good?; do you end up with a perfect finish (like a quality hotel might have)? Cheers

A man who has the perfect solution!!!
-
Hmmmmmmm ! some good advice and some dangerous advice ! if a suggestion fails and I comment then I am criticising- which is asking for trouble ! SHMBO may agree with me ( !!!!! ) but changes her mind months later ? The path through this is full of traps . I see no man has mastered this journey ?
-
OK!. So I will want one thing SHMBO will want another - how does any couple ever reach some compromise/ agreement? I could just "give in" but that's not right!!! So how does everyone resolve purchases for their new build/renovation ?? Cheers!

They try again how can we stop them

Or strap something similar to one of these to a tree near the parking spot and catch the bastard https://shop.naturespy.org/product/2016-bushnell-trophy-cam-hd-essential-e2-119836/?gclid=CMLc7MiAjNUCFUW4GwodOjcOBA -
Yeah. I take your point. Cost against time. One of those I have one of those I don't!
-
Hmmmm, whilst I like the thought of the OSB (i.e. something nice to walk on) I don't like the extra cost. I might just keep to battons and make a single crawl board e.g. piece of OSB with a 'lip' so it sits over a batton - gives me a nice surface to walk on and not worry about putting my foot through the membrane or breaking my leg. Roof is 30deg incline so sounds safe too me.....
-
I see. So only necessary if I have OSB. Cheers
-
I see . But I thought that was the job of the membrane ???? . I've not seen any examples with counter battens - is this just because of the osb ? I.e as the membrane can't sag water could get trapped .
-
Sorry ; not sure what you mean ....
-
As good as you imagine !! but I have the plastic verge covers ; don't they hide the cut anyway ?
-
Ok ! I'll look for the cheapest osb I can get at 11mm !
-
Can't I just angle grind wholes for halfs ??
-
Hmmmmm 18mm osb is going to add some cost to 70metres square
-
No pain no gain though I understand that it is meant to sag 10mm in between the rafters to allow water run off . But if I Osb the entire roof ; membrane ontop then batten - there will be no sag - its flush to the osb and tight .......
-
The quote I have includes " roofshield" he said it was the best and recommended it . So I guess I've no need to rush
-
My only real concern (assuming I do understand everything said above) is that if I board out the roof and then as I go do the dry verge etc. it's all going to take me "sometime" to do. Does it matter the OSB and incomplete dry verge (and indeed battons) will be exposed to some rain ???? It's a big job on your own
