  1. Thanks balustrade??? Lol there isn’t any ? I did suggest to the Architect to cast the drainage channel in situ ; but he wasn’t happy and wanted standard anco type product .haunched ontop the grp and obviously flush with finished level . total area is question is approx 6m x 6m cheers
  2. ? I’ll attempt ! reinforced concrete : this is done high compressive insulation : only 50mm ( meant to be 120mm ) causes me issues anyway osb ? If using edpm or just grp : this will add 20mm reinforced poured concrete : SE wants 75mm chippings : whatever :-) sand :-) whatever driveway blocks : 50mm as you can see 180mm at the front is an issue . upstands ; well glass is 64mm ; so 100mm for up stands min . grp or edpm not structural . nothing either side of drainage channels . One near the house to ‘protect’ it ; other to deal with run off from sloped finish . cheers
  3. I have found quite a few ‘balcony’ type arrangements with concrete on edpm for extra strength . But yes ; it’s not the standard . But who wants a standard house ?

  5. Yep ! but I’m scared !! Do these things and it leaks all fingers will point at me . “ didn’t do edpm “ didn’t do “ grp “ .... etc .... ? Also to get “installed “ professionally ( ie not a edpm or grp roofer ) will cost more . Keeping to ‘ conventional ‘ methods makes everyone happier ( and cheaper ! )

  7. Bondage on a Sunday ? Here's a *rough* site plan. The drainage channel's will be added after i.e sit on top the EDPM/GRP. 'Path" and the wall are 'outside' the below ground construction. Another issue (there are so many!) is I really need to gain height!. At the house from current slab to build is 38cm, at the front (entrance via gate) is 18cm. If OSB is required whether GRP or EDPM that looses another 18mm!!. Tempted (without telling architect!) to put zero insulation in (to save height). Would insulate underneath i.e. in ceiling with celotex or if ceiling height becomes an issue aerogel (ignoring the £££££). I *assume* that altering that insulation layer wouldn't be an issue (MHVR so presumably no condensation issues). Saves me 50mm 'moving it'...... Any views on that appreciated also. Strangely enough companies that only sell GRP recommend that; companies that only sell EDPM recommend that - how strange!
  8. Ok ! Grp some questions ! osb - fine ; do I fix ? I.e screw through osb and insulation into concrete ? Or just lay ontop ? ( assume tougue and grove best ). do I ignore expansion gap at edges due to pour on top ? . My 4 edges are 2 wall abutment and 2 run off ( I think !! ) - so I use appropriate trim ???? assume wall abutment trims are mitred to go around walk on glass upstands ? ( can’t seem to find a video of grp install around up stands ) cheers
  9. Thanks ! been looking at some grp install videos now ! so osb on top insulation still ? Do I really need to do the whole roof in one sunny day ? I.e osb ; mat , resin , final coat ? have to look into how up stands are dealt with ...

  11. Problem is there’s no obvious roof/ ceiling waterproofing product - certainly not to use in this context . After all it is just a flat roof - but more concrete on top . I guess I’m just worried once edpm down I can never get to it if there was a leak - same no matter what product I guess . i did look into waterproof concrete as well as a belts and braces approach - architect thought it was a waste of money as edpm installed correctly should last . too be honest as it is it only leaks around the sky light holes and where the original pour has shrunk and pulled away from any steel . Was also intending to put non permeable pavers on top . But of course that’s the opposite to suds - so not sure they exist . the area does have a fall of around 2 degrees so will have drainage channels on top the edpm in front t the house ( too be safe ) and one at the front - so ‘sat’ water shouldn’t be an issue .
  12. Thanks guys I was going to install myself but ‘ worried’ myself away from that idea edpm would be 1 sheet with cut outs for the roof lights . I think I would osb under it ( on top the insulation ) . Thought also about something on the edpm to protect it from concrete pour . As your replies suggest it is not an obvious choice which to use . once edpm done I intended to shutter the lot and run water over it to check for leaks . got to be brave !!!
  13. Really does sound like horses for courses. No ‘correct’ answer for a particular situation - all down to quality of installation !!
  14. Hey all My architect has spec’d edpm but talking to some roofers they say that’s the wrong way to do it and should be grp .. So I’m not sure now ! My flat roof can be parked on and has 4 skylights . so bottom up structure is : reinforced concrete high compressive insulation osb ? If using edpm or just grp reinforced poured concrete chippings sand driveway blocks I guess the risk with edpm is tearing it during installation via the rebar or the pour . One ‘roofer’ said the edpm would perish in this situation ( but wouldn’t say why ) - I can’t see why as it’s essentially a rubber sheet . Perhaps it doesn’t matter - different roofers prefer different methods ? Any views / considerations I might be missing ? Quite a few companies had no issue with edpm !! cheers

  16. Great ! So what kind of pump ? it needs to only come on with demand yes.? E.g toilet flushes etc . without the electronic control unit I guess some float valve for when the tank gets low mains water is added ?
  17. Oh ! Bury ibc and pour concrete around !!! If that’s ok ; that’s a massive saving !!

  19. Ah aerogel ! n years ago couldn’t buy a small portion now I can . 10 years from now ( or another technology ) will be more affordable. I do notice the building industry is very slow to change . As an ex software engineer- 3 years later you’ve moved on !!
  20. My roof area is smaller and I can collect from all of it . But agree the cost of super large tanks make it uneconomical. I guess it’s either a ‘don’t do’ or accept the compromise of cost against storage ....
  21. I’m going to install it and yes at 2k return on investment will be sometime but that is based on water costs *today* . You use more than you think and as just 2 adults could skip it . But hey ! Awkward to retro fit and helps save the plant a tiny tiny bit . I’d pay for this, AShp , pv , pv battery etc . Anything to get off grid as much as possible . I guess if cost is the issue then at least put the pipe work in ready for a harvesting tank at a later date . But as a self build I always take the 20% vat back ( discount ) as a once in a lifetime offer . Call them up and haggle the price down ! This works surprisingly often on the premis you will pay now over the phone . its a simple technology ( tank and pump ) ; take the opportunity while you can would be my advice ?

  25. Hey all Got some of these little blighties to fit I assume they need cement in between and not touching each other . Whats the best way to do this ? I’m assuming any cement on the face will stain and look a bloody mess ? Could masking tape each block - but that can’t be right can it ? ? Cement inbetween as I lay or point afterwards with cement ???? cheers
