welcome, looks an amazing project. the problem here is that many contractors out there are very much of the 'it's how we've always done it' mindset and so using timber frame is deemed wrong by some. it also means that, generally, they won't be paid for that as the majority of people use a TF company to erect the superstructure and then hand over to the contractor/client to do the rest. I also whole heartedly agree with all the comments above about insulate now! for a small cost now adding extra insulation will reap the rewards for the rest of your lives living at the house. don't stick to building regs, you need to far exceed them. I also agree to the comments about external blinds. get them in the design now and you can hide them away in the fabric of the building. I recommend spending the next 2 weeks hidden away in a dark room reading as many threads on this forum as you can! good luck and we look forward to following your journey.

I don't think £4k is too bad for that staircase @Faz! looks great.
-
+1 to getting more quotes! I always try and get 3 quotes minimum to get a good comparison. I do think your quote is a little on the high side but, as is mentioned, if you need to pay for scaffolding then that can add a substantial amount.

Pylontech do 2.4 and 3.5kWh batteries. And you don’t say if it’s a hybrid inverter or an AC coupled system. Nor make/model of inverter. either way and making assumptions £14.5k seems a lot for the 10 panels, 2 x pylontech batteries and a hybrid inverter check online prices and compare with what’s on your quote.
-
Yeah sorry. My post was mostly for @Faz as he needs to rate the videos to allow those without accounts to view.
-
it's hard to compare if you don't give us all the details. battery size/make, inverter, panel make/model, any optimisers/micro inverters, trays in-roof/on-roof etc.
-
Vimeo now enforce the uploader to 'rate' the videos labelled as public for suitability. like an age rating. if it's not rated then you have to log in to view it. https://vimeo.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/224818087-Content-ratings

Buying a 'traditional' new build! (Persimmon?)
Thorfun replied to Andeh's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
the Persimmon house won't be how you want it though. yeah, it might be easy and it might 'do', but that's not what self-building is about! I understand the stress, time, money issues and I'm going through it all but the other day our charred larch turned up and it's beautiful and something you'll never find on a mass built home! and I knew it would all be worth it. 🙂 -
we've left 30mm for tiles. I think I got that figure from previous posts from @nod and our architects seemed to think it was a good number too. 🙂
-
I was only joking btw. I'm happy to let you win this one. 😉 I have a 10.5kWp array so I think 4 x 3.3kWh batteries should suffice for me. the think I'm liking about using Pylontech batteries is if I need more capacity I can just chuck another battery in there to increase it. I like the modular aspect of it.
-
how about 2 x Squirrel PODS with 8 x 3.3kW batteries per phase? so that's 79.2kW total storage with 7kW discharge per phase.
-
and with climate change who's to say these occurrences won't become more frequent. I see no issues with doomsday planning, I do have a basement/bunker after all. when the s**t hits the fan only @pocster and I will be left in our dungeons living out the rest of our days off our battery solutions. 😂
-
the cost of a wood stove with chimney etc wouldn't be far off a whole battery solution let alone the slight increase for one that islands the power in case of a power cut. I'm after a battery system so that I can use my excess generation at night, and having the ability to use it in a power cut is a bonus I'm happy to pay a little extra for.
-
not according to the marketing blurb from other manufacturers! Sonnen have a 'Sonnen Protect' which acts like the Tesla Gateway (which you have to pay for on top of the PW2) from my understanding and the Lux also has something similar built in. The Sofar has a separate 'chint' that you wire the important loads to for use during switch over. What the PW2 does have though is the 5kW throughput and 7kW peak which is nice but if you're just planning to run lights and low power stuff overnight then 3kW should be more than enough.
-
even if it's only once every two or three years that's enough for me to want to plan for that eventuality.
-
Fair enough. The Solaredge storage doesn’t do power cuts so no good for me anyway.
-
I thought that was out already for the 6kW inverter? https://midsummerwholesale.co.uk/buy/storedge
-
Not many but we get power glitches. Although we were without power for a day or so in the last storm and other areas not far from us were out for about 4 days!! so it can happen out here in the sticks with loads of trees around.
-
the essentials obviously. TV, internet, Xbox etc. 😉 oh, and I guess lights, heating, fridge, cooker etc. I'd like to be able to live as normal for a while in case of extended power outage. obviously during the day the solar PV will recharge whichever battery and power the house and then the battery used overnight. tbh, I've not worked out our usage which is why I'll probably just end up going for whatever size battery I can afford and it seems that the bigger battery/more modules you buy the cheaper £/kW it all becomes. I'm quite taken by the reading I've done on the Lux Power ACS 3600. with a 10ms UPS/EPS switch over I wonder if a separate UPS would even be required. I'm speaking to a couple of companies about quotes for one with Pylontech batteries.
-
it all depends on what you want! 4 is ok if you're not having MVHR and it is substantially better than building regs at 10!
-
I think our liquid screed installer said they no longer use Longfloor as they had issues with the product and now only use Cemfloor. but, being cynical, you just don't know if those issues were financial or not! we had Cemfloor though and very happy with the product and finish

Bathroom underfloor & towel rail wet or electric?
Thorfun replied to Tadpole's topic in Bathrooms, Ensuites & Wetrooms
and there will be many! 😉 -
are you having MVHR? if so, you probably don't want to go much lower than 4!
-
thanks but just not interested in having a petrol/diesel powered generator sitting around so any extra is totally worth it for me.
-
just remembered that for the Sofar ME3000SP Midsummer mentions this: " Emergency backup power: The ME3000SP is able to provide backup power of up to 3kW via its EPS circuits. To use this feature you'll need an additional contactor chint to change the power supply from the mains to the batteries in the event of a grid failure. The ME3000SPs backup power is designed to power critical circuits and is not suitable for whole house backup due to the power limitations. " but from what I can tell the Lux doesn't have that limitation and switches to EPS in 10ms.
