  1. My son works for a major car seller (Ford) and they are not allowed to take EV,s in part exchange because the market is flooded with second hand ones that are not selling 🤷‍♂️
  2. Well I think it is slow, yes heat pumps won’t be installed by 2030. I think this transition is driven by the public mostly rather than gov, they are doing what will get them votes , look at just stop oil! I want a better planet for my grandchildren.
  3. So what do you suggest ?
  4. I totally agree and I tend to use the word “polluting” when referring to burning fossil fuels which can never be good for us or the planet so a change to “solar” and “wind” has got to be good for everyone. If we don’t make these changes because others won’t or can’t be bothered then nothing will get better.
  5. It should never fail in that short time (unless split/torn because of movement/wind).
  6. I love real timber but would use engineered and glued, (i hate floating floors) I did this in my build in the lounge and it looked fab, tiles elsewhere downstairs (with UFH) and carpets upstairs, LVT in bathrooms with electric UFH. What about cork in the bathrooms? Retro and coming back into fashion and feels warm unlike tiles.
  7. Generally camping stuff fits the bill but apart from those Scottish storms that brought down overhead power what in reality is the “off line” chance? Yes the further north the more chance I guess. For those with PV and batteries they are more secure for a short time.
  8. I did it differently, being OCD I wanted only whole and half bricks around openings and bespoke windows, the brickie was told the approx size and place of the windows and ordered the windows afterwards fitted to check reveals (Windows mounted on the inside of the outer brick skin in the insulation zone.)
  9. Well some do (mine did) however if you assume they won’t you can mitigate as much as possible. “You can’t cure stupid”
  10. Sorry I missed that, my bad. This makes me even more impressed with the gang I had on my site and feel very lucky to have had them.
  11. In fairness is it their fault? They could not see the pipe within the screed and only when it comes to the surface (too late) will they have known 🤷‍♂️
  12. If it were me I would push the company to renew the whole loop if only for peace of mind.
  13. Very true, hence my comments on the listed building thread about affordable EWI on poorly insulated homes being a small step in the right direction.
  14. The additional costs of insulation in my build were minimal and my ASHP about the same as a gas boiler (if I had access to mains gas).
  15. Really, well apart from the EV I invested in insulation to reduce my ongoing costs and the ASHP did an excellent job of delivering with a decent COP and all way cheaper to run than my previous house. Anyway it’s not only about finance IMO, It's about comfort which I achieved in spades!
  16. Deciduous trees !
  17. Don’t I know it……….(whispers “divorce” 🤯)
  18. Well my local authority BCO was brilliant, helpful and pragmatic. (Like planners, no consistency).
  19. Welcome to THE self builders forum, there is lots of very good info and expertise here from people that have “been there done that”, from grafters to geeks. so bring on the questions and looking forward to your plans and aspirations
  20. So you don’t need noise generators to let the public know they are there 🤷‍♂️ Easily sorted with noise level rules, that’s just nuisance. Not if clean fuels can be found and burning nitrogen I believe only produces water. Yes, we don’t know what we don’t know, yet. Then why are you still driving an ICE (oh because you won’t get to your mums in one hit 🙄)
  21. Which is why grants are available to help some make the changes they would like to make, yes I agree there are those that can’t make those changes but I believe the old ways (burning stuff and lack of insulation) will become a monetary burden so change is financially beneficial. This will never happen overnight but things are changing and for the better I believe. For example I still drive a diesel car and is fairly economical but the cost of a new EV is beyond me and the scrapping of a serviceable car has hidden costs, yes I will change at some point when things move on (but being a “petrol head” I hope a clean ICE fuel can be found 🤣)
  22. For the greater benefit of everyone and new marketing opportunities opening up 🤷‍♂️
  23. I don’t think the incentives are artificial, grant towards heat pumps because of people power wanting to tackle climate change. I think it’s the changes the majority of the public wants (stop burning fossil fuels)
  24. I don’t believe this has been the case otherwise the gov would not be discussing in parliament bringing in guide lines. I think some schools do but there is no consistency. Just noticed this… New mobile phones in schools guidance issued today (19 February 2024) backs headteachers in prohibiting the use of mobile phones throughout the school day, including at break times. Many schools around the country are already prohibiting mobile phone use with great results.
