As per @JSHarris above, this is my understanding of the problem with LEDs, but I understand there can be a problem with some stand alone AC-DC converters giving radio interference, problem is finding good ones. Perhaps this forum could list good ones from personal experience, or list the bad ones to avoid.

As an ex BT employee (decades ago?) I knew of these problems even back then. This “finding spare pairs” was always a problem. I remember being up a pole one day trying to find a spare, I was on the phone to “routing and records” the department that kept records of pairs and issued new ones and being told “pair 9 is spare “ I tested it and it was a worker and the cable went to a nearby house. The guy on the phone was adamant I was wrong and his records were right ?. The main problem with broadband is that the BT network was only ever designed for speech.

I am planning owl boxes around us, we have at least one barn owl that is resident near us and I want to encourage them. We already have bat boxes built into my workshop and many bird boxes dotted around, we enjoy having breakfast watching lots of different bird types on our feeders. Next year I am looking forward to sowing the meadow (currently a soggy bog) with wild meadow grasses and flowers ?.

Get rid of those awful downlighters...
joe90 commented on Ferdinand's blog entry in God is in the Details
I have temporary bulbs in our kitchen but fancy using led flat panels like @JSHarris, my only worry is the radio interference some have. -
Glad it didn’t do anymore damage and as you say, great that with Nulock it’s that easy to replace a couple (mine would not be that easy, regular slates but with clips so not as bad as nailed).

Getting ready for air test on a new build
joe90 replied to joe90's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Sort of, I am a fan of the Tony tray but with ours we wrapped each end of joist in plastic and trapped that behind the render coat. -
I used Screwfix fire door ball race hinges (with screws) and glad I did. The weight of the door even on washers cannot be as good as on a ball race .

Getting ready for air test on a new build

I have just had the quote of £250 plus VAT (don’t suppose I can claim back the VAT as it’s a service?.?) -
Getting ready for air test on a new build
joe90 replied to joe90's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I am old school, blockwork, cement render then wet plaster, parge coat behind joists where plastering not done. I am not a fan of membranes and sticky tape. Warm roof lined with OSB glued and screwed . I am aware of the “breathability “ debate of OSB, if it is too porous then I can apply a coat of sealer. -
We are ready to do the air test on our new build and I have just Emailed the chap that does all my builders houses (recommended). Apart from blocking the external vents to the MVHR is there anything I should prepare ready for the test? Do I need to get smoke matches/generator to seek out potential leaks during the test.

MVHR air flow rates
joe90 replied to lizzie's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
I am yet to balance my MVHR but because an imbalance caused the bedrooms to cool a bit too much I turned it off, there are only two of us in a 250 sm house and even with it off the bathrooms clear quite quickly. My wife still prefers to open a window when the weather is mild despite my trying to educate her ?, in fairness she loves to wake to the dawn chorus which you don’t get with MVHR!. I do turn it on when we have guests or do a lot of cooking but don’t find the air quality a problem when it’s not on. -
Yes a bugger but at least you found the problem and fixed it, phew, really glad for you, these things can hang over you till a solution is found ?

MVHR air flow rates
joe90 replied to lizzie's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
Good to know, I have to get round to balancing mine at some time. I just need to “invent” some restrictors in my home made manifold. -
They will be doing their estimation based on normal houses, not our energy efficient ones so they will get it wrong IMO. I will be supplying readings and asking for the money back quickly explaining about our energy efficient house.
-
No, I meant how many times could I get away with swooping supplier at £50 a time ?
-
Makes me wonder how many times you could do this? ?
-
I think it’s good that anything like this is kept in house fir members
-
Sorry @ProDave Oz messaged me with the link, didn’t realise you were with Octopus ?.
-
Just switched to Octopus 12m fixed, I was recommended by current Octpous user @Oz07 so we both get £50 ? . Not going E7 yet as life is too hectic (outside building life,,,,,] but am going to think about it. I am going to monitor usage (using @JSHarris link to power monitors) to see what the ASHP uses).

Starting council tax, house not finished!
joe90 replied to joe90's topic in Party Wall & Property Legal Issues
Lucky bugger, it’s not like that in Devon ? -
Why would you need a PHE ?
-
Got this thread mixed up with “sizing ASHP” thread. Yes “Bulb” is cheaper than Octopus slightly but it is a variable rate whereas Octopus is 12month fixed rate so might be more secure as there are predictions of price rises afoot. I am going withfixed rate initially as I need to work out our load (I need an energy monitor) and be able to judge how much the ASHP uses to see if E7 is worth it for me.
-
Ah, not what I meant , I am saying Octopus E7 day rate is cheaper than I am paying with “green energy” for single rate!
-
Yes @ragg987, but with green energy I am paying 32.09p day rate and 21.29p per unit., like you Octopus is 21.13 day rate and 15.77 single rate but 18.7 day rate with 10.45 night rate on E7. I will have to do the maths to see if E7 is worth it. I need an energy monitor.
