Breaking out concrete with minimum mess?
joe90 replied to Sparrowhawk's topic in General Construction Issues
If not able to lift it an Electric kango is your best bet, anything that cuts it will create more dust, does not need to be huge, it acts like a lump hammer and chisel (without the hard work), mind you hitting it with a sledge hammer might break it up enough to lift it out in pieces. -
Can you do a contemporary self-build on a budget?

Plus every room except bathrooms were dual aspect and splayed reveals reflected light into the rooms without the losses of larger windows. -

Only on the North side, “age” appropriate for the other sides. -
Yes I saw that but too late for my build.

Are you taking the pi@@ ? Never heard that about planners before.

I found it impossible to hire the kit to DIY blown cellulose, even a customer of mine in the hire trade could not find a machine to hire. I have read that in the USA if you buy enough product they lend the machine FOC.

I've had enough of ....
joe90 replied to ToughButterCup's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I will only borrow stuff on the understanding if it breaks I mend it (borrowed a petrol concrete cutter once and broke the pull cord but replaced it and told the owner). I don't lend tools because I am OCD and look after my tools, (clean and super sharp) I would rather do a job for someone using my tools than let them use my tools. Luckily my builders were brilliant, tidy, listened to instructions (even when their view differed) they ended up good friends). -

I don’t think it is off topic, see I prefer “cottage” not “contemporary “ but it would be boring if we were all the same. I would argue mine is not a boring “box” (although nearly square). It was brilliant to live in, ticked all my boxes and cost very little to run, what’s not to like (shame the judge took it from me 🤯) any way this was my “boring box”….. -
Rockwall batts I found to be non itchy not like the old loft insulation roll stuff.

French renewables boost causes negative electricity prices…
joe90 replied to Alan Ambrose's topic in Housing Politics
Instability? Surely this is a good thing turning off power plants in favour of renewables ? I am sure it will take some juggling to balance the network. -
Can you do a contemporary self-build on a budget?
joe90 replied to flanagaj's topic in New House & Self Build Design
I agree, mine was 10m x 12m, longest side facing South with bifolds and conservatory, North side smaller windows, not quite passive but close, needed very little heat input and easy to build. -
However with increased electricity usage generally (heat pumps, electric cars etc etc) with the movement away from fossil fuels surely having the supply first maybe a good idea. Horse before the cart for once. 🤷♂️ storage is the next hurdle IMO.

Erection of 1.8m fence adjacent to highway
joe90 replied to Amala Singh's topic in Planning Permission
Although I have fought planners in the past and don’t have high regard for them, part of their job is to maintain a landscape that is consistent and in keeping with the surroundings for the benefit of everyone. Whilst we might not all agree with the rules I think your fence where you have built it is ugly and not in keeping with its surroundings and neighbours. -

This from gov document… Footpaths: a highway over which the public has a right of way on foot only. -

It’s about its ability to NOT wick any moisture (like I posted about earlier).

How to fix fence post to concrete patio slab
joe90 replied to WWilts's topic in Landscaping, Decking & Patios
It really depends how the patio slabs are fixed down and on what sub base, I would worry about wind,s pulling the fence/slab away from the ground (which is your question, I get that). The screen is slatted so not a complete sail but still will catch some “air”. If you believe the slabs are fixed well enough then metal post feet bolted to the slab will be sufficient. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/222366660700?chn=ps&_ul=GB&mkevt=1&mkcid=28&var=523080564585 -
Newbie doing first self-build on 'hard mode'
joe90 replied to Drellingore's topic in Introduce Yourself
Wow what a lovely project (as one who loves woodwork and heritage buildings), it will make a huge statement relating to the heritage of the site and the planners would be bonkers to make you change it, best of luck, keep us posted, I will be following this closely 👍 I was suprised by the condition no cars to be parked visible to the road 🤷♂️ -
Yes I agree, how about a sheet of ply behind (in case SWMBO changes her mind 🤷♂️) if your plasterer is coming back then why not.

Great minds think alike 🤷♂️(see my post above)
