  2. Welcome: and with an offer like that, you are especially welcome. Ian
  3. Just been to Hartley Hire and HSS. The response was polite, but one of astonishment that anyone should dare to ask
  4. Thanks be to the Almighty for that...... (spell chekers aint what they used to be)
  5. I found a valuable consignment (for the build) dumped on my verge this afternoon. The driver had arrived, off loaded and gone. A few days ago, and again yesterday and this morning, I called the company from which I purchased the goods to ask if I could be told when the delivery was to take place. Fat lot of good that did. What would have happened had that consigment been nicked?
  6. Quantity Surveying is about risk reduction. In the context of house building, the smaller the budget, the greater the need A quick search on this discussion group shows the following.... a wet evening's quiet reading by the fire side. As usual, everyone else says it better than I can.
  7. I would like ours to be installed at about 900 mm. Hope thats Ok?
  8. He'll have been tired, that's why.
  9. You ask for encouragement ... Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. The Road Not Taken, Robert Frost And if poetry isn't for you, then think of the time you will have to wonder ~ what if I had given it a go? All these years of 'What if' Most here have given it a try. Not all of it pleasant either. But everyone we meet even for a brief chat realises that self building adds something extra to your life. Something more than just the house. In my case, wrinkles.
  10. Morning! Well, you've already covered three themes that occur here regularly. One of us already, then Welcome. Ian
  11. @Onoff, thanks for the attachment, it is very helpful.
  12. That sounds really smart Dave ~ Photo please!
  13. We are about to buy our consumer unit(s)- which CU should I choose? And why? I have a pair of ruined hands so ease of access is important. Beyond that, we will be fitting RCBOS throughout. I look at Cus in Catalogues- and havent get a clue about what is good, bad or indifferent about them.
  14. At last. The Internet used to share information: rather than the opposite.
  15. And thats why I'd prefer to use cable with red and black strands. How would I know if the retification is done in the LEDs themselves (... more expensive I bet?)
  16. ? Thanks Its also the case that the "thingamajig" that takes a/c and makes it DC sometimes also called a driver isn't it? Why?
  17. Thanks. Very helpful. So, its pick a colour then innit? I quite like violet .....
  18. If @Jeremy Harris says he has a regret during his house build, I'd be daft not to learn from that experience. Here's what he said We are planning to have a backup battery system sometime soon(ish). But not yet. Prices need to come down a bit I think. Since we are planning to have two Consumer Units, will it be possible to put what we consider the essential circuits on one board, and the not-so essential circuits on the other board ? .... For example Oven, hob, fridge freezer, mvhr supply, washing machine, 5 amp lighting circuit and a few kitchen sockets on one board and the rest on the second board?
  19. Can you give us an idea of how flat flat is Gary? I ask because our screed varies by two or three mm over 5 meters .....
  20. Yes - LEDspace ( thanks to @PeterW) Its the profile selection that takes the time - almost too many to choose from
  21. Thanks lads. Priceless stuff you learn here, priceless. Guess what I'd already gone and done ....?
  22. DickHead (@AnonymousBosch ) walks into an electricians and asks for "Erm that two core cable stuff for connecting drivers - no transformers - to LED strips" "Well, sir would that be [ @Onoff @ProDave @Jeremy Harris babble - white noise, - feel like a pratt ] or perhaps simple bell wire?" " I dunno " I need to connect the transformer (some 12s, some 24 s to the LED- maximum length of cable, 2m, maximum lenght of LED 2m ) in such a way as I can swap out the driver when it decides to throw a hissy fit. I know what to use to connect the two core cable to the end of the LED strip. This section of the cable will be burried in the plaster, so I need to be sure to use red and black cable so I get the polarity right. Whats the CORRECT cable called ? Please. Pretty please. I just want not to look and sound like a right numbskull when I go to my suppliers.
  23. ? I'm tempted too. But I know I'd get the polarity wrong when I need to Swap the driver (...thanks @bitpipe)
  24. I took the author to mean the gap between the OSB and the 2x2 ...?
