Leaking ufh overlay system post screed
Big Jimbo replied to health mechanic's topic in Underfloor Heating
I just zoomed in on the photo. That joint looks wonky. Might just be the angle of the picture. If it's going to stay like that i wouldn't cover it back up with screed for a fair while. (weeks) Just to make sure that when it is going through hot/cold cycles it is ok. -
What building regs apply to a wooden garage,?
Big Jimbo replied to joe90's topic in Garages & Workshops
So Joe, how are the doors and windows fitted. They cant be fixed to the logs because they have to be allowed to grow and shrink with the seasons. The Dunster house One's have clips on the logs, and the doors that allow the logs to expand and contract. -
Cheers @JohnMo That was the info i was after.

Well, first of all by ensuring that the dot and dab is done properly, with a continuous bead of plasterboard around the perimeter edge for starters. Can't put a membrane on a block wall. What i am interested in is the fact that people are always harping on about wet plaster, only way to go, etc. So, back to the question of how thick does plaster need to be to be considered airtight ? forget the edge, and the penetrations for the purpose of the question.

Incredibly difficult hole to seal
Big Jimbo replied to j_s's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Bloody good effort. Well done. -
@ProDave well wet plaster on a wall is considered to be airtight ? So why is 3mm of wet plaster not considered to be ? Is it to do with the thickness ?
-
Would 12.5mm plasterboard and 3mm skim with no penetrations considered airtight ?

Should I fix my energy prices?
Big Jimbo replied to Adsibob's topic in General Alternative Energy Issues
You are paying too much. Get under the floorboards and tap into you neighbours electricty. That will save you a few bob. Or bi-pass the meter like they do in a hash growing house. -

@joe90 Get those doors into those silly clips before you go much higher or you will be buggered mate. -
I have a friend who is a Colourist. (fancy name for a painter if you ask me) Works all over the world for the obscenely rich and famous. He won't use F and B paint for anything. I've just tried to ring him to ask him about yours, but just got a funny foreign ring tone, followed by being cut off. I would defo give it at least a good few days to see if it dries, and hardens off.

I have gone to a structural engineers with my passed plans in order to get some calcs, and to make sure that what i had planning to build was not going to be a pain, or cost a fortune. Turns out that he is a Chartered Engineer, and an Architectural Technician. He came back to me and said that he thinks my floor plan could be improved. Boy was he right. He has kept my footprint, and made the internal so much better. Seeking the opinion of other people is difficult. As @SteamyTea said, what One person likes, another might hate. It might be worth seeing if you can find an Architectural technician locally who might have some ideas as to how you might sex it up, without costing you a fortune. There is a bod on here @ETC who has made peoples posted plans immeasurably better. He might be willing to take a look at your plans.

The pump will have to work harder. They are only tiny. I wouldn't go further than 2 meters of hose.

Building up to the boundary
Big Jimbo replied to low_and_there's topic in House Extensions & Conservatories
If the neighbours house is 50cm lower than yours than your damp course is going to be about 500mm higher than his ? If thats the case when all the crap fills the hole between your houses, his is going to get damp a long time before yours.😁. As @Mr Punter has said. If its a party wall you have a right to build off it, even if he does not like the idea. Check that out before you go further. -

What a pain. Is it near an edge by any chance ? -
Great view. Looking good.

Within 3 meters as long as you are not going deeper than your neighbours foundations, then no PWA required. Be nice to your neighbour. You need the fence taken down, and will want access in order to point up your wall. YOU need to take responsibility for not building over the boundary. Don't leave it to others.
-
Between 3 and 6 meters you use the 45 degree rule from your neighbours bottom of foundation. Even taking it from your neighbours ground level, at 4 meters away you would have to be digging 4 meters down. I doubt that so you are good to go. Make sure that nothing on your extension overhangs the boundary. Gutter etc.

@Iceverge Just found them and watching now. cheers

How far back to sit my windows ?
Big Jimbo replied to Big Jimbo's topic in General Construction Issues
@BotusBuild It's the reason why a lot of window reveals feel cold to the touch, and have damp and mould issues.
