I appreciate of course that there are lots of variables, tree coverage, cloud cover, snow cover etc etc. However all other things being equal and assuming for the sake of chaos an approximately east west orientation (if that actually makes a difference). How much PV would you want to put on your roof, to ensure that you never had to pull from the grid even on an averagely dull day. Lets assume for the sake of removing some more variables also, that you don't have an electric car to charge, or if you did could just charge at night, didn't have any massive drains on power like an industrial launderette attached to your house, and had lets say 2 tesla power walls as backup and for use at night. If it helps whoever wants to answer, i suppose you could even assume you aren't grid tied. Obviously there are major contributors to energy reduction like a house being passiv, having relevant smart systems which help control usage and such. lets assume at least the house is passiv dertified

I wish you were my wife. Were that from her you could replace the Exactly with Absolutely, the Right with Wrong and Both with Every

I assume after moving into the new house it was then a (relatively) simple case of selling the original house to pay off the mortgage on the new one? also given the interest implications, were you able to consider taking the upfront money and offsetting some of the interest of the mortgage against the (decreasing) interest of the loan, were it put into a savings account of some sort?

@Ed Davies thank you for that explanation. I understood all the words but i think over the next few days will just need to re-read it a bunch to ensure i understand what it all actually means. For now irrespective the magic going on inside things, if i have a cable coming to my house supplying 3 phase, in a case where; I have an electric car I have an ASHP I have the normal sort of household appliances and features no gas on site above 10KwP of solar In terms of the wiring itself does it differe at all. I sort of imagine that there's a different type of sonsumer unit or some sort of spliuttter arrangment where some goes to the consumer unit for stuff maybe in the house, another consumer unit for all the rest?
-
So; 3 phase required if a large amount of PV being fed back to the grid. Is it sort of like having a dual-sim phone. Two signals come into the same place but they're seperate. So If i chose to put in a 3 phase supply, i could have one for the interior of the house, so lights, sockets, appliances etc. Then I could maybe have one for the garage and lets say also the ASHP, and if I wanted could use the other for maybe charging an electric car. This way if there was a problem on any individual circuit (lets say the car one for the sake of argument), you could shut the supply down to that circuit but I could for example, just plug my car into a 3 pin socket in the garage, or if the house burns down i can still charge my car.... By the way, i DO know quite a lot about bran based cereal products, so any questions about them, ask away. Just get confused about the USEFUL stuff.

Super - so what is the cut off below which you wouldn't need to think about 3 phase. Where you have 10KW, what is the maximum amount for single phase? Or have I misunderstood this?
-
Right. I won't even try to understand why one phase is 240 and 3 is 440, so long as the practical upshot is that 'you can run more/bigger stuff' in a property with a 3 phase supply as compared to a single phase. So the wire that spurs off the mains and comes to your house is physically bigger is it, than for most people? Why would you want seperate circuits? Does this protect against anything or give some sort of redundancy? Is it more costly, and if so is there a rough approximation of how much in percentage terms? If You are generating power on site from solar/wind, would you need 3 phase after a certain point?

Have looked through the various posts on here mentioning the phrase and just don't understand it. I'm not too bothered about how the magic happens more the practical application. In my head I'm sort of imagining it like a couple of pipes with water running through; the little pipe has a normal flow of water for a normal house where the big pipe has a big old gushb of water because there are more people in the house needing it. Single Vs 3 Phase. Is this broadly correct or am i way off the mark?

There we go. Knew i'd have missed something

nice size that. No idea why I can never get this question out of my head, but given the size, why no 4th bedroom?
-
That is tidy that is! How big is it, or have I missed something on the plans?

Jeremy Vine is a reprehensible knob top. Pity he wasn't in the lobby with earphones in when the digger came along. Devil's advocate is one thing, but he's a virus to journalistic balance. -
I'm sure i'll be corrected, but i don't understand how. You can get rockwool (or whatever you use) at a 100mm depth. Something will need cutting somewhere and I guess if you're going to get someone in for the boarding they could probably do it quickly as a pro where you or I as an amateur stuffing woolly stuff in holes, are more in need of it being simplified. Doesn't plasterboard come in different sizes as well - couldn't that be factored in to compensate?
-
side issue to this. If your soil stack is internal and goes down through your slab and out, does one just box it in somewhere like a utility room for example? So poo upstairs, flows through your joists goes down a boxed off bit them out under the slab?
-
If you know you're going to use a particular product, why not ask for the spacing to be arranged to that width anyway - assuming that's within building regs. I would imagine that's ok. Minimises the cutting then... or are you timber frame?

hmmm go fund a criminal. I understand his actions - may have done the same myself - still doesn't excuse it though. -
Temporary security / safety site fencing
Big Neil replied to Randomiser's topic in Planning Permission
If temporary can be considered as 'site works' or setup if you prefer. It's just as worth stopping people getting onto the site in respect of injuring themselves them suing you afterwards. Heras fencing is cheap as chips to hire and to buy...... -

read that on the bus this morning. apparently the work had just finished and it was due to re-open today wasn't it. All for £600. Still at least they must know who it is f it relates to a pay dispute. Plus he clearly knows how to efficiently operate a digger, so if anyone needs to get some foundations underway just make an offer to HMP Liverpool in a couple of weeks cos i'm pretty sure they'll have someone available on day release at the rate of sod all pounds to you.... -

Obviously dependant on pipe location but for insulating the pipes, some sort of spray foam, if only for relatively inaccessible areas? -
probably more expensive i would think, but 'ECO' and what not
-
if you are using rockwool slabs they feel compressible enough that you could squeeze them in, otherwise the rolls are also soft. I was pondering this on another thread also. Cellulose maybe. I think it was @JSHarris who said he had cellulose and found it very effective accoustically

Welcome and what not. Good bunch of people on here. I ask ridiculous questions all the time and don't get shouted down so knock yourself out. Whereabouts in Suffolk are you building?

how about little generators under the dinging table with pedals - hooked to home supply. PEdal away while having dinner. The Tesco approach and all that...
