Best simple ideas and concepts to design in to new build
Roger440 replied to albert's topic in New House & Self Build Design
If you have the space, its a no brainer. They are just so cheap now. Spent 13 years using ramps! If i had a choice of 2 poster id get one with a screw mechanisim. Not very common now, but infinitely more controllable if lowering the car over an engine for example. I think they fell out of favour as if the nut fails (cant remeber its proper name) then it falls down. Wont happen if you look after it though. -
I need to run 4 outside supplies. As they will all be going underground at some point, they will all be in (various sizes) SWA. Obviously they will run up the side of the house. At this point, assuming this is all legit, i would enter a junction box, where the SWA outer will be terminated and an earth cable then run to the consumer unit through the wall from the back of the junction box. The rest of the conductors, my intention was to strip back enough of the outer sheathe after the earth termination to run the conductors all the way to the relevant breaker. Reading on the interweb, it suggests that once i have stripped back the sheathing, from that point the cable is no longer "as manufactured" so technically not correct. If i dont do this, i would need to terminate in the junction box and join it to short bits of twin and earth. Which seems daft. And another joint for no good purpose. Is the considered wisdom that im OK with running the SWA conductors all the way to the consumer unit? Correctly terminating the SWA outer at the junction box?

From a practical "working on cars" perspective, a 2 poster (like this) wins hands down every time. There is almost no job you cant do. However, in a domestic setting, they take up a lot of space, need height, and are always "there". A good compromise, assuming you have head height, is a full height scissor. You can still do 95% of what can be done on a 2 poster, but when its down you have a flat floor. Down side is they are MUCH more expensive than a 2 poster. And need 2 recesses in the floor. After that, a half height scissor. Ideally these need a shallow well, but you can just lay them on the floor. 4 posters really are quite big, and quite limiting and you still need the height. Been round the loop a million times. Full height scissor is my 1st choice as you can use the space flixibly. -

To all you North Devon & Cornwall dwellers
Roger440 replied to Roger440's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
You could well be right, and ive not really noticed any change on "normal" houses. Just the sort of stuff im interested in. Which is great for me, not so good for those selling! -

Agreed, the south is nicer - and more expensive. Put simply, cant afford that. I like the middle of nowhere. Do people really dislike rural that much to push prices down as far as they are? Indeed. We have discussed before. Cant do cold or midges! Indeed. North cornwall doesnt seem that cheap considering that its a good chunk further from anywhere. Having monitored prices (by surfing rightmove every week) my take is that the sort of property id be looking at seems to be taking a significant hit on prices, with many being re-listed as reduced and more available for the money than a year or two ago. As above, this surprises me. It seems a pleasant enough part of the world, not ludicrously isolated, not far from the M5. But stil cheap. (cheap being releative) -
How to deal with a noisy sewerage treatment plant
Roger440 replied to joe90's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Thanks Jeremy. The intake was the thing i hadn't really come to a decision on. So just adding bends really! It was the air intake as well for an underground application that was also an issue. The intake would need to be above ground. Which means it still wouldn't be hidden. -
Looking forward into the future, id like to move to a cheaper part of the country, for obvious financial reasons, but also, because, ulitmately, my hobbies and interest are best served by way of large outbuildings. Thats simply not possible here (noth bucks). Any remotely decent sized building in a residential settings is immediately turned into another house. Unles i spend into 7 digit territory, which i dont have. Plus its just to overcrowoded here (worth a seperate thread) Looking at it, there are clearly lots of suitable properties in north devon and cornwall, often old farms etc. Which also means not too many neighbours. Being a dweller of the south easts "arc of prosperity" as Nick Clegg called it, these often look good value, (more so over the last year or so) and fit the bill, usually with some or lots of work.Which im quite happy to do. The question i guess, is whats it really like down there? The north devon area round the "worthys" seems to have a lot of those properties for sale despite the very low population density. There must be a reason? Or is it just lack of employment? I know its a rather open ended question, just wondered how those who made the move feel it has gone looking back?

Jeremy, can you expand on what you did to the intake to minimise noise? -

Im going off the "bury it" idea, for exacxtly those resons. Water, ineveitably WILL get in. Shame as i think its the best option from a sound point of view. I think i will do as Jeremey has done. Furtunately for me, im building a retaining wall round the patio so can incorparate a block built structure into it for the compressor. Well, at least thats the current plan! -

I too have no idea. What Jeremy says is correct about life span and maintain ability. The inability to maintain stuff without ripping stuff apart in houses is a pet hate...... -

It’s a shared system, 2 houses, both 4 bed, so number of bedrooms plus 2 = 12. At the time the plant was ordered it was 10 or 16. They do a 12 nom -

A septic tank kind of smell! my understanding is the soil pipe on the house, which, logically has a clear path from tank to stack was all it needed. That said, it a 16 man unit with only 4 people, so it needs turning down. From the blurb, whilst it trumpets the fact you can turn it down, it doesn’t actually tell you how, -

At the moment it’s been running for 3 days and it smells quite a lot. Does a new plant take a while to get established? It was full of water to start with. -

How to deal with a noisy sewerage treatment plant
Roger440 replied to joe90's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Well mines in all and running. The box is temprarily mounted on a paving slab as ive got to lay a patio etc round it. However, it is quite noisey. Having had the dubious privelege of looking inside it this morning (and more than halving the noise with a towel) i think its fair to say that minimal engineering thought has been applied to this. The compressor sits on rubber feet, but has 2 plasctic upstands each side of it, with a hole in the top of each and a tie wrap strapping it into position, thus bypassing any benefits the rubber feet might have! Standing next to it, you can feel the vibration through the ground!. Plus the lid rattles when its closed. Addtionaly, the rubber output pipe is in hard contact to box, as are the pipes to the tank where they pass through the box.. Upshot is, this lot is destined for the skip.New design required. Im thinking something similar to Jeremys, but buried, and built into an insulated "well" to cut down virbration transmission. And suspensd the compressor on "strings". And rubber mount the pipework. And, and and,................................ In fact i might put 2 compressors in there, so when one fails, i can switch to the other one. -

Thanks for the info. I understand what you are saying. The front half of the house is 200 years old and im doing similar to you there. Logically i can do the same at the back. Just need a way to soften the visual impact of a big trench! Plants. My wife will be impressed. I like the open space idea, she wants plants everywhere! -

Joe, where have you got to with this? Mines just being installed. One suggestion the guys installing it had was to mount the pump on strings, ie suspend it, so its not actually touching anything. As mines only 8 meters from the house, its a concern ive had right fro the start, but figured i will have to adapt/modify etc. Its a beast though..................
