Can an Oil boiler be just swapped out for an ASHP?
Roger440 replied to pacemaker1000's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
3.5 as an average through a whole winter seems optimistic to me. In which case oil is just about there in being the most cost effective. The good news oil pices are not directly linked to gas. Yes they have gone up, but nothing like the same. Knowing how government works these days i guess extra tax incoming on heating oil. -

With prices where they are going, oil will be the cheapest form of heating available. Becuase it not linked to the price of gas. I just filled my tank 2 weeks ago, which, happily, was the day it was its lowest before it went back up again. -

Whilst not MOT exempt, my maestro diesel van (perkins FTW) might be seeing more action. does over 60MPG. Or will do again just as soon as i get the injection pump swapped out for my shiny new one. -
Where is the kWh price heading in 2022?
Roger440 replied to epsilonGreedy's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Its already happening. Restricted kitchen hours seems to be the thing at the moment. But little in the way of reporting. -

No help so far. at all. Insolvencies up 20% on 2019 levels so far this year. Lots of reasons why, most of them obvious, but plenty of companies are not in a position to weather a storm significantly greater than covid. Unless government do something pretty radical, its going to be grim. -

Because you live in the real world! But you are right, there is no reason that renewables have gone up. Other than the way the market is contructed. Which of course is in the interests of those who did the constructing. HMG, could resolve that tommorow. But they wont. They will print more cash and give it gas companies. -

Sounds good! Mine came off the roof of an industrial unit opposite. Used to be a solar install company. Went bust a few years ago. Landlord was having them removed. I substituted my van for the skip and all was good I really need to try and understand what i might get out of them in the winter before i decide what to do. Not much i guess, even if i mount them for that scenario. -
Its interesting. But i still wouldnt have used plasterboard. Im basing that of my own practical experience. Of course, you may get away with it, if your moisture levels are suitably low. Which of course is why one person solution is anothers failure. As per my earlier post in this thread, why take the chance. Keep all the build up as permeable as possible.

Overall no. But each vehicle conversion "type" would need approval, so thats a lot of potential approvals. But if only a limited number of potential sales of specific EV, whos going to front up the desgin costs. Or each vehicle needs to go through IVA, which is a cost in itself. Plus of course the design cost of something "different". Whilst i dont get involved in disabled vehicles, approving stuff gets expensive real quick, so you need to be confident of your market. Just guessing at the problem though. Maybe something else. -

do you know whats stopping disabled conversions? Cost of the base vehicle or the cost of the necessary approvals being spread over such a small number of vehicles. IVA would surely fix that? -

Range anxiety as you observe isnt necessarily real. But i think points to a wider problem, not just EV's but a lot of the solutions espoused on this very forum. Namely, they are generally complex solutions, requiring a bit of thought, understanding and research to make them work and get the best from them. In many cases the end user experience is not easier than what went before. EV's being a good example. In many cases its worse (ASHP's being a good example, where poor/inappropiate installations are common) Aside from artificial monetery constructs to change/forcebehavious, if the new tech is better than the old, people will use it. Just thats is rarely so. Ive even aquired a full 4.5kw PV array, inverter etc. Never used. Free. Just figuring out the best way to use this, having largley eliminated the problem of cost, is hard enough. And i actually want to figure it out. And i can do it all myself. So like most here, we are a fraction of 1% of the populous. The average man on the street needs easy. And simple. Ever thought to pop in to your average newish build estate and see how many MHVR systems are actually still switched on? -

Ours used to be the same, but the piss taking by the staff was on another level. All swept away now. NO recycling of servicable items allowed. MUST be scrapped. So much useable stuff being wasted, so more new stuff can be created and sold. Makes you wonder what the motivation of the council actually are. If indeed they have any beyond incompetence! -

I have a couple of freinds who run EV's who would strongly disagree with you! -
Maybe im missing something in your description, but plasterboard is not breathable. Thereby negating your other efforts.

That wonderful. You have been very fortunate. It still makes no economic sense. But she isnt anywhere close to 20k miles in 9 months. Which would rather skew the numbers in favour. Meanwhile, the corsa continues in service @48 mpg -

Finding a working charger when away from home. And all the planning required when doing so. Or in my wifes case given the length of journey to work choosing a car with enough range. Sure, they exist. At a price. If they had chargers at work, it could just about make sense, but they dont. -

Well, your wish is granted! Energy costs spiralling out of control.. Inevitably it will force behaviou change. Sadly, i suspect it will be ugly. I think you will find yourself in a minority. -

Very. You have to pay to dump anything that isnt "household waste". Which is basically what you put in your wheelie bin. DOESNT cover anything else. Replaced your kitchen, want to dump the old units. Er, not, that will be £10 a cupboard. An old pallet. Another fiver. You can, quite literally, dump nothing without paying.
