  1. Theres lots of good ideas in this tread, and a handful of crazy ones. Everyone is welcome to discuss these forever, which is all very nice. But their relationship to the real world is tenous at best. Im not actally sure i see much benefit in discussing what are in many cases, fantasy, however well intentioned, from a practical perspective. The real world exists as it is. I find it more useful to consider the real world, rather the the world as you might wish it to be.. As your post is a direct pop at me, maybe ill step out, despite actually suggesting real world practical solutions. Never mind.
  2. Well, i could. But, and i dont really know, as im replacing the windows, will i not need to do some sort of assesment as its a thermal element? I also dont want to get tangled up in nonsense about trickle vents. Im not having any. I really dont want to get involved in paying for reports just to give to the inspector. Nor do i have a a clear idea what the duty holder roles entail.
  3. Thanks They triple is 40mm and U 0.70. Punching some examples in seems quite sensible.
  4. Dont mention the ferries! And definitely dont mention port issues. Sadly proves my point yet again.
  5. I couldnt find the depth. Thanks. They seem to be well thought of. Expensive as you observe. I think i need to stick to UPVC for this. Cant have timber as ill spend my life maintaining them here.
  6. Thanks. Will give them a tinkle. I probably need to fit them myself, as i need to do remedial work to the reveal as i want to move them further inward. Means no FENSA cert, but will gloss over that, even with the threat of 2 years jail time under the new regs!
  7. Proving my point once again.
  8. I get all that, i know more about it than i want to. But it is a demonstration of a government run project. And its a small trifling one compared to what Ed has planned. And you think it can go any other way than badly? A bilion or so here and there isnt much to get worked up about on projects like this. But its going to be more than 100 billion over budget. You can do a lot with 100 billion. Its just not sustainable.
  9. Exactly what i was going to say! But i think anyone could have guessed that.
  10. Can you refer me to some succesful government infrastructure projects? Say, in the last 10 years. I can think of one. HS2. What an utter shambles. Assuming its ever finished, its going to be at least five times over budget, and wont deliver half what was planned. And never mind the sheer cost of building it to a bigger gauge for bigger trains. Which now wont be built, because the trains will now have to use the exsisting infrastructure, so will be conventional size. With HS2 it goes on, and on, and on. I do agree with you, that the core services of the nation should be government run, but the damage is done, and is, without a huge long term program of building back up the institutions, impossible to recover
  11. You do keep avoiding the thorny issue of how, whatever you do, is funded? An easy first step is to unpeg renewable costs. Simple. Could be done tommorow. But it wont be, nor next week, or next year, or during my lifetime probably. Making mad money is way more important than worrying about climate change. As i keep saying, no one in authority is serious. Self enrichment comes first. Regardless of anything else, electricity needs to come down, not putting up gas.
  12. Hmmm. Sounds like what i want isnt available? Im not sure i want to get involved in "creating" my own windows though? Rehau do flush casement, but as you say, that might be different. They only fit 34mm to those. Who was willing to do the 36mm? I need to get some numbers from them all i guess and make a decision from there. Slightly thinner triple should still be better. Should!
  13. Only one publishes that. And, in essence, i think you are right, its a triple in the space of a double. Id need to check the figures, but it wasnt up to other triple glazing id seen in more conventional windows. I should probably as all of them to clarify.
  14. Same when i did my garage base. Spent forever getting the thing bob on. Then insulation over, again, no voids taped etc. Concrete guys arrived and asked who did it. Reckon it was the best prep they had ever seen. Certainly doesnt say much for what they usually see.
  15. No practical advice, but id love to do it if i had the right property. A proper way of doing something that will last for decades. Assuming of course, you can still get the "right sort of pitch".
  16. I looking at replacing my 1979 UPVC double glazed units at the front of our cottage with new units. Given its traditional nature(ish) i want to go with flush casement style. I do, however, want to go to triple glazing. This is limiting my options. Ive identified, residence9, evolution and Anglian all offer triple glazed options. Ive not found any others so far. Of these 3, does anyone have opinions on how good they are, particulary the window sealing arrangement as this seems to be the longer term short coming of all modern units ive encountered and had the joy of "adjusting". And also, anyone ive missed? Want to stick to UPVC, so no wood options please.
  17. Double, no, but you are still proposing to artificially, and deliberately make people worse off, to give the money to the leeches! You appear to miss the key point however, that a big chunk of those affected cannot fund a heat pump installation, be they on gas, oil or electric. The capital cost precludes it for most. Doesnt matter if there is a long term saving. Not everyone is wealthy Buildhubber. The price could be 1:1, and it STILL would have limited effect. If you start looking at paybacks, its just a long time. Even for me, i can afford to improve my house insulation etc. But payback is long after my death. So why would i do that? Even replacing my old double glazing with decent triple and im at 40 years plus. Unless you "give" people their heating system upgrade, its not going to happen. I suspect this is where we will end up. The leeches will be rubbing their hands.
  18. Because modern government simply cant run anything. Im not disagreeing with your logic, im of the view that energy should be a state function, but using an example of 40 years ago isnt helpful. We had organisations and institutions capable of delivering such things. (ive said this before). That all gone. Government has no resources, and definitely no ability or competence to build anything at all. Never mind run and maintain it. We are incapable of maintaining anything. Network Rail would be a good example. Fully state owned. Eds self written document makes it clear that huge government sums ((i forget the amount, but it will be way off reality anyway) will be required to create that infrastrucure, even though it will be private enterprise building it. I still say, where will the money come from? We are more likely to go for an IMF bailout than we are to fund a new power distribution.
  19. I dont remember it being particuarly high. As i had no other options i didnt focus on it that much. And it was only onew (big) room
  20. I did foamed glass with concrete over. Total depth 240mm. Didnt meet current regs, but light years better than what you have, and avoids any risks of excavating too deep next to existing foundations.
  21. Ive used it, though the main drivers were damp issues in 1800's house, and minimising build up depth. Clearly with the amount i used, we were not achieving building reg level insulation. But, easy, definitely. Id consider it again, be it retrofit or new build.
  22. Welcome back Good news on the resolution.
  23. Whilst your last sentence is indeed very true, and an important point that seems lost on most, but the idea of nationalised renewable is nearly as daft as councils building houses. Within a few years most would be non functional. And where will the money come from to buy them all? Sorry, this is just bonkers.
