Generating electricity by burning fossil fuels is the largest single source of carbon emissions, responsible for around 40 percent of the global total. The rapidly rising share of renewable energy in the mix has led to forecasts that power sector emissions would peak as soon as this year, an important milestone towards decarbonisation. But the peak hasn’t yet been reached. Wiatros-Motyka and her colleagues counted emissions from the power sector using data on electricity generation through the first half of 2023, looking at 78 countries representing 92 per cent of electricity demand. They estimated emissions for the remaining countries based on historical data. According to their report, a substantial jump in wind and solar generation, as well as lower demand for energy, led to a decrease in emissions in several countries. This included a 17 per cent decline in the European Union, a 12 per cent decline in Japan and an 8.6 per cent decline in the US. Emissions in India rose by 3.7 per cent, though at less than half the rate of the same time last year. However, the reductions were offset by a 7.9 per cent increase in emissions from China’s power sector. Despite the country’s grid starting 2023 with emissions below those of last year, severe drought and heat waves saw China’s hydropower generation drop to record lows, prompting an increase in coal generation. Is it a new normal?” Minghao Qiu at Stanford University in California says he is wary about reading too much into a single-year decline, but says climate change is expected to drive changes in hydropower, even though exactly how much and where is unclear. “The magnitude of the global total change will probably be small, but hydropower supply in certain regions will decrease dramatically,” he says. Taken together, the researchers found that emissions from the global power sector remained effectively flat for the first half of 2023, increasing by just 0.2 per cent compared with the same period last year. This was despite a 12 per cent increase in wind and solar generation, as well as a fall in energy demand in several of the highest energy consuming countries due to slowing economic activity, a mild winter and energy-efficiency gains. If it weren’t for the droughts, the researchers found emissions from the power sector would have fallen by nearly 3 per cent this year. They may still reach their peak in 2023 depending on what happens with hydropower and energy demand, says Wiatros-Motyka. But even if the peak doesn’t happen this year, she says the growth of renewable energy means peak power sector emissions are almost certain to happen next year, with clean sources of electricity meeting any new demand. “I think that we are very, very close.”

  3. I would say there are only two issues. Inequality and barriers to entry.
  4. Why not legislate so that local residents (i.e. council tax payers in that area) are allowed to purchase the land at market value. So if they object to a local development, regardless of scale, they have the right to buy the land. By putting a price that locals are willing to pay to keep it as is, sends a big message to everyone.
  5. For whom? I have not said about building developments. I think this is the problem, we build ghettos, we just called them towns and cities. It has never been a problem in the past, it is a problem we have created by restrictions, rather than inovation. What is wrong with personal transport, it does not have to be 2 tonne 4 wheel drive vehicles. Yesterday, I left work and Amazon Prime had a convoy of delivery vehicles going to the rural depot. Or to put it another way, the fleet of eclectic vans was full of locally employed drivers who contribute to the area.
  6. Why better than agricultural areas, you prefer to live in agricultural areas. Could well be the case, so why not get the person who polluted it to pay, or at least the insurance company, or the people that did not enforce the relevant legislation i.e. the EA or LA.

  11. Do this 'resin' printers use acrylic resin, or something else. I worked next door to a company that had a 3D resin printer (was called additive rapid prototyping back in 1994). That used an acrylic resin. The college had a printer that used a powder that got lasered, then a new layer of powder applied, then lasered again. Took days to print the smallest of things.
  12. Sometimes it is easier to gloss the woodwork first, then and small smears, splatters, spills of emulsion can be wiped off with a damp rag. Ceilings first though, just get the neck ache over and done with, before the back and knee ache. Not many professionals clean up at any stage.

  15. I am rather self taught in chemistry. I have to reduce it all to the physics, then it starts to make sense. The biggest problem is there are 118 elements, and about 20 words to describe how they attach to each other. Then it is a memory test, and makes no sense to me at all. My last school chemistry teacher was a Born Again Christian, a complete twat of a bloke who put me off the subject for 40 years, even though I used chemicals every days at work for 30+ years.

Oxygen is a tart of an element and will easy swap to the hottest element available, so it may not need free oxygen in the air to sustain a fire. Yes, how many cars have we seen explode?   17. Which survive impacts better, and don't corrode. Diesel only needs a high temperature to ignite, whereas gasoline, generally, only evaporates rapidly when heated. One of the major causes of vehicle fires, after an impact, was caused by brake fluid. This is now non flammable. But I reality, most vehicle fires are caused by an electrical fault, similar to houses. If only from the fuel. An EV will have around 50 kWh of energy, a half filled tank of fuel will have maybe 60 kWh. So similar. The rate of burn is different though. Gasoline is faster than diesel (why gasoline engines can rev higher), not sure you can really compare a battery pack in the same way as they hold together.

From this years June Survey (this is an important agricultural snapshot) We could build on that unused 50 million m2 Crops The total area of arable crops saw a 1.3% decrease between 2022 and 2023, falling to just under 3.7 million hectares. Cereals account for the majority (70%) of the total arable crop area, covering just under 2.6 million hectares in 2023. The area of wheat decreased by 5.3% to 1.58 million hectares, whilst barley increased by 2.2% to 799 thousand hectares. The area of oilseed crops increased by 3.4% to 369 thousand hectares in 2023. Oilseed rape accounts for 93% of this area and rose by 6.1% to 342 thousand hectares in 2023. Potatoes decreased by 12%, falling to 82 thousand hectares in 2023. The remaining arable crops covered 670 thousand hectares. Field beans and maize together account for almost two thirds of this area. Fields beans rose by 1.2% while maize saw a larger increase of 7.5% between 2022 and 2023. The area of horticultural crops covers 117 thousand hectares of land, a decrease of 6.3% compared to 2022.
