Garage floor step down

Recommended Posts

We are just finishing off some details

i was under the impression that the garage floor had to be 100 mm lower than the house floor due to any spills from vehicles.

My architect seams to think this has been relaxed.

Anybody done a recent building control submision about this.

I had a conversation regarding this with a BCO and they said as long as the fire door has a threshold that would stop spills he would be happy (this was for a Scottish property).

I can give you the Northern Ireland BC viewpoint.......

100mm is required but can be slopped to the point a vehicle will be parked.

Edit - to avoid ethnic conflict you probably need an English rather than British or UK viewpoint.

For England see page 30 of Approved Doc B:

Either the garage floor needs to slope toward the outside and away from the door into the house (no minimium slope specified) or you need a step of at least 100mm. The idea is to stop spilled fuel flowing into the house.

Am I missing something here, surely you have to have a step or slope somwhere anyway cos the garage door threshold will be at ground level and the floor level of the house will be 150mm higher anyway??
