saveasteading Posted yesterday at 08:54 Posted yesterday at 08:54 For whatever reason, the terminal has been cut off the starlink mast, or extended with a wire. So we just have this bare cable. Any advice on how to fix a usb plug on it? I can try harder on focus if necessary.
-rick- Posted yesterday at 08:56 Posted yesterday at 08:56 If it's a recent ish model I thought the cable was basically an ethernet cable. So you can get normal rj45 connectors and crimp them on and then get a back to back coupler. 1
saveasteading Posted yesterday at 11:16 Author Posted yesterday at 11:16 So this? I find it hard to believe this is so cheap. That's for 10! They are half that price each by the hundred. Yes it's recent and was working well until someone decided to cut the end off. (That we have cameras is disliked by some. Perhaps that's why it's been accidentally damaged and no rush to resolve. So it has to be diy.) Do the wires just push in? I expect the colour positions are easy to research.Such tiny wires though: I can see me losing some copper along with the plastic. Is it a stanley knife or wire stripper job?
Alan Ambrose Posted yesterday at 11:27 Posted yesterday at 11:27 (edited) You need a proper crimp tool, and preferably a tester and a bit of a knack for small fiddly things. Easier to check out the other end, check it’s a standard LAN cable (Google?) and replace the whole thing. Can recommend the right bits though if you want to try yourself. Loads of videos on youtube on how to crimp cat5/6. It’s a useful skill. Edited yesterday at 11:28 by Alan Ambrose
Alan Ambrose Posted yesterday at 11:58 Posted yesterday at 11:58 (edited) If it is CAT5/6, you need something like these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B088R5F3D2 (Get the 'pass through' ones rather than the standard ones, much easier to use.) Note that you need slightly different ones for CAT6 as the conductors are slightly thicker. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CH3TDJ4B https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08CZW1CQ8 These are also cool for joining CAT5 cables and supposed to be water / weather proof. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09YHQQ91S Edited yesterday at 12:06 by Alan Ambrose 1
saveasteading Posted yesterday at 12:15 Author Posted yesterday at 12:15 Thanks I'll check these references. I need easy. The cable is built into the wall and it's lucky that one person thought to make it accessible at all. Btw I think the cameras perhaps won us 20 mins production per day. "Of course we trust you but it is security."
-rick- Posted 23 hours ago Posted 23 hours ago Couple of notes: 1. If this is outside then you'll need to find a waterproof enclousure for the coupler (might be able to find purpose built cable joint - but it needs to maintain the signal integrity) 2. If just making one or two cables you can get away without the crimp tool by using a flat bladed screwdriver on each of the pins and the cable restraint clip. But if you want easy get the tool (they aren't expensive) 3. Starlink will provide a new cable if you prefer (likely at a cost but you might be lucky) 1
Alan Ambrose Posted 23 hours ago Posted 23 hours ago Easiest/cheapest would be a nerdy teenager who has terminated CAT5 cable before 😀. 1
ProDave Posted 23 hours ago Posted 23 hours ago Can you strip that cable back a bit so we can see the cores properly? From the little I can see that does not look to be the standard colours for a cat 5/6 cable. If it is a non standard termination I hope you still have the plug that was cut off to see how it was terminated.

ProDave Posted 23 hours ago Posted 23 hours ago So not a standard cable. So you need to work out what colour goes where. Do you have access to the good end of the cable, you could work it out from there with a bit of testing, or keep searching and see if someone has already worked it out and published it.

If you are only repairing a break you only need to match the colours on both sides. The only real condition is to keep the each twisted pair near each other to maintain signal integrity.

True, but I read this as being near the end as he just wanted to fit a Cat 5/6 plug and plug it in? @saveasteading More information needed
saveasteading Posted 17 hours ago Author Posted 17 hours ago It's very high indeed so the cable isn't being changed. I've exposed the wires, and damaged one, thus demonstrating that a stanley knife is to be avoided. Amazon do a kit of a multitool (strip and crimp) plus some pass through terminals, For £22 so that may be the way forward. There's plenty of cable so if I fail then a proper person can still do it. We've lots of similar cables fof doing fancy things i'm not much involved in so someone will do it.
Alan Ambrose Posted 15 hours ago Posted 15 hours ago (edited) Think the question is whether it's standard cat5 wiring. Probably is, but the cut off end would prove it. Is that still in the dish? Or if the other end is a length of cable too, then it’s not a big problem as long as you use the same convention on both ends, and you can use, say, the joiner above. ProDave Posted 15 hours ago Posted 15 hours ago Now it is stripped it does look like standard colours so you should be able to crimp a plug on and try it.
Onoff Posted 14 hours ago Posted 14 hours ago Gen 2 Starlink is their own proprietary plug. Gen 3 is basically an RJ45. Just come off of my flat roof with my lad final fitting the new Gen 3 dish.
dpmiller Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago cat6 with the separator in the middle I think. Not that it matters. / but surely this is criminal damage? Someone needs a slap for it...

Are you really going to clad around that? 1
saveasteading Posted 1 hour ago Author Posted 1 hour ago (edited) 2 hours ago, ProDave said: Are you really going to clad around that? No we will have the cladder remove and refix it. Fyi the cladding is composite pir double skin on timber battens. Then behind there is the timber structure you see there. Vandalism? I don't think so.. plain ignorance probably with plasterboarders either damaging it or cutting off for easy threading. And further enquiry would very definitely find that it was Mr Nobody. The main concern now is that I might get a plug on it and it still doesn't work. Edited 57 minutes ago by saveasteading

saveasteading Posted 12 minutes ago Author Posted 12 minutes ago 27 minutes ago, ProDave said: replace complete cable is best answer. The issue is the height. That's 6m so needs a cherry picker. What's that £350? We will have one there but not fir a few weeks and I'd like good wifi on site and the camera working. As long as an attempt at a plug doesn't do any harm I'd like to go for it. If that's no good then we need a new cable and to fit it when the mast goes back on. What I haven't said so far is that we will also move the mast 3m to the left, as there is an office there. Where it is was to suit the scaffolding at the time. I guess it would be prudent to buy a ready made cable.
