Soil pipe penetrations through slab - which way up?

I noticed that my groundworker has provided the soil pipe penetrations of the slab with a male end up-over (currently covered with a female blank).

I had expected to have female ends up as I presume it's usual to have flow from a male end to a female to reduce risk of leakage...is what he's done normal? (am I worrying about nothing prior to setting all this "in stone" 😉)

It’s common to see pretty much all arrangements. If you’re using clay or cast pipe you don’t generally get female/male ends, only straight union couplers. It works fine. Same goes for twin wall. 
 

I like it when the builder leaves a coupler as you see there with a blanking plate left flush with the slab surface. Nigh guarantees you won’t damage the pipe through construction.

You should thank your guys, they’re doing a very good job there.

 

The female up theory is not ever what happens, and open pipe always gets cut and then a fitting placed on to it to carry on above the slab.

 

Stand back and enjoy as the magic happens, and buy them a few slabs of beer as a thank you. Seems to be very meticulous work compared to some of the muppets I’ve encountered out there

Agreed. Not often you actually see the double tape and top hats being used!

@Dunc, looks great. You should be pleased with the results. The “mars bars” are much better than the “rebar chairs”. 
 

I had a mix with my SVP stacks of female coupler and just male ends, all protected with gaffa tape. No idea why I had both. You just use a slip coupler to start the new run from the FFL.

Yep, generally very happy with my groundworks team. Quick, efficient, adaptable and communicate well, and to the untrained eye seems good quality work.

Some sort of foam to raise the mesh onto the slab.

And are they left in place as the concrete is poured? (I'm hoping to (finally) start my extension in coming months)
