Stairs - before or after tiling?

Reaching that stage of thinking about the finishes. We need to install our own staircase and I have it designed and priced ready to call off. However, the hallway is to be tiled and the stairs will be open on the underside.

 

Do I tile the floor first or allow for tile and adhesive, install the stair and tile to it?

 

Thoughts on a postcard please........

I would tile it first, far easier and the stairs will rest on a solid base rather than estimating adhesive thickness.

tile first, i tiled after and it was a pain cutting / fitting them around newel posts

+1 tile before you even confirm the staircase order so you get exact measurement

We had no choice but to tile after as the original tiler let us down and then the locally made staircase arrived as he couldn’t store it and I didn’t want to keep it in the garage. However our staircase runs up behind the kitchen wall so it was easy for us to get the measurements right and only a small bit of cutting for the tiles. Under the stairs is a wardrobe so the tiling in there wasn’t so much of an issue. It would have been far harder if we had a more complicated staircase.

THEN check floor to floor height, it might not be exactly what you expected, before ordering the stairs.
