Marvin Posted February 18, 2024 Posted February 18, 2024 If your in the process of building it may be good to know what's happening to Building Control The good idea department decided that after Grenfell they would set a building inspector standard through legislation: Building Safety Register (BSR) So after the 6th April 2024, if "inspectors" are not Registered Building Inspectors (RBIs) it will be a criminal offence to work as a building inspector. You will be able to check on line to see if an inspector is registered and what inspections can be carried out by the inspector. (tell me if you know where this is..) https://buildingsafety.campaign.gov.uk/making-buildings-safer/building-safety-regulator-news/regulating-the-building-control-profession/#:~:text=After April 2024%2C if they, passed an independent competency assessment. However Lack of funding and lack of skilled people means there is presently a shortfall of qualified inspectors who have the qualifications. https://www.housingtoday.co.uk/in-focus/race-against-time-before-april-are-we-heading-for-a-building-control-inspection-crisis/5127866.article https://www.deeside.com/building-inspector-shortage-and-safety-reforms-strain-councils-in-wales/ https://www.building.co.uk/focus/race-against-time-before-april-are-we-heading-for-a-building-control-inspection-crisis/5127835.article As if the weather isn't enough to contend with....

Expand I guess its encouraging they know there is a big problem to fix. Not so good that the "solution" will mean a shortage. Of course, when that happens, i think we can safely assume the fix will be more self certification. Which will take us back to the problem of any old crap being signed off!

MAB Posted February 18, 2024 Posted February 18, 2024 My areas local Council Building Control dept was closed in April 2023 and outsourced to a company EBCS Ltd which is apparently 'the first Building Control Mutual in the UK.' https://ebcsltd.co.uk/
Canski Posted February 18, 2024 Posted February 18, 2024 I hope the last one that came to me has to leave.

What was your LABC? Edit: I read your post as they were the first mutual in 2023. But their site says 2015 which is probably right. Edited February 19, 2024 by DevilDamo

Expand A while ago he refused to sign off an extension that I had built due to no ventilation beneath the beam and block. It was built in as per the beam and block plans and he failed to see the air bricks. The customer was in a right panic. Recently he came to site to do a pre plaster inspection and failed to inspect the second of two houses because he 'didn't see that one' An absolute jerk. I have had 3 different LABC inspectors since the start. The first was very helpful before and during his visit, the second one spent 30 mins talking about his divorce and 5 minutes looking at the houses.

Hughgo12 Posted February 29, 2024 Posted February 29, 2024 The pay isn’t nearly enough for the hassle and the risk associated with signing off.
