I've found the hardest part has been accurately conveying an idea.  My other half is, by nature, a "glass half empty" sort of person.  This means that I'm always starting from a disadvantage whenever I suggest something.  This is compounded by me being able to immediately see from a drawing or sketch what something will look like, whereas she can't.

You appear to be married to my wife! :D

But being serious; my other half's lack of ability to visualise things is a massive issue. It sounds rude but quite simply she has zero conceptual vision. It makes choosing ANYTHING an almost impossible task.

I too am lucky that I can visualise anything from a plan or idea, my wife cannot. I say " trust me, I am a builder and I know it will work" ( works most of the time) but she insists that as a woman she will have a better idea when it comes to soft furnishings and colours ( maybe ?).

Sadly not a sinner! ;)

She can't visualise things in sketch form or rendered CAD. She insists on "seeing" things that don't yet exist.

Yeah my misses can't visualise at all - though she says she can.

On the other hand I can see the exact thing in my minds eye even before a shovel went in the ground.

In a previous life I use to write computer games for a living so starting off with a blank screen and then 18 months later a near finished product ; you need to see ahead to the finish line.

If though I tell her I can visualise the finished house she takes that as I am dictating what the colour of the kitchen, tiles etc. etc. etc. etc. would be (which I'm not of course!).

it's been made clear it's OUR house - even though I fought for planning , I build it, I pay for it ...... but it is OURS! O.o

I'm going to put my neck right under the guillotine here and say that this is an issue for most females (waits for blade to fall).

It needs to be 'real' for them to understand - which is difficult when it doesn't exist.

I'll get my hat now - I assume all the female self builders are about to hunt me down ........

Nah, it's cruel to persecute creatures of lower intelligence.  :P

It is true, though, that women often have poorer spacial awareness than men.  It's also true, though, that men generally have poorer communication skills so when their sweeping over-generalisations are heard, they lack the proper verbal reasoning skills to dig themselves out of the very large hole they have just put themselves into whilst being watched by a woman gleefully waiting to bury him.

Having spent quite some time marking out dimensions on a factory floor to demonstrate to hubby why I think the architect's proportions for one of the bedrooms in the new build plans, I can confirm that there are also exceptions to most rules.
