iSelfBuild
I only have 100mm to play with to fit a lintel to the underside of my utility room tiny lean to roof. I was going to go for a 6" concrete lintel but I don't have the room. The door is only 840mm wide. Can anyone recommend the type of lintel I need for a solid wall? My Dad said I only need one on the internal skin that supports the roof wall plate. Do I also need to do structural calculations for building control or will the inspector just agree it's way overkill and not ask. Like I said the roof is TINY!!! Russell griffiths
Why not just swap the 6inch for a 4inch 840mm is not a large span if only carrying a light load.
Declan52
One like this http://m.builderdepot.co.uk/concrete-lintel-textured-pre-stressed-65mm-x-100mm-x-1200mm.html
Temp
Catnic do a lintel 88mm high but I'm no SE so can't really comment on suitability.. https://catnic.com/products/ang
iSelfBuild
Pretty sure all the ones posted are not sufficient, you need a few course of brick above for them to be effective?

Two questions .. - what is above the lintel..? - are the joists parallel to or landing on the lintel ..? will help to advise the correct choice . iSelfBuild
Above the lintel will be a timber wall plate, it looks like 3x2 or something (not crashed it out yet) the rafters go directly onto it. See the picture attached. All though the door will go virtually up to the gutter.
PeterW
Is that a single skin wall ..?? Assuming those are 600 centre's and only one joist lands on the lintel then you could get away with a Naylor ES1 65mm lintel.
Oz07
Bet a big enough frame head would support that. Wouldn't surprise me to see a 4x4 timber above a door on a lean to like that! D.y.o.r!
Russell griffiths
The thinner 100mm concrete prestressed lintel will be way overkill. No load on that at all

It's a no brainer. 100mm bearing ( overhang ) each side and Roberts your Mothers Brother. You could quite happily get away with a timber head tbh, it's really doing nowt. Declan52
A 65mm/100mm pre stressed concrete would carry that no bother many times over.
iSelfBuild
Fantastic. Will building control be OK with that? They will be inspecting it.
PeterW
Yep - no issue with a pair (one inside and one out) as allows you to change the door in the future
iSelfBuild
Happy Days! I supply the precast industry with lifting systems so I might pop to one of my customers that makes lintels haha
PeterW
Pair of 1050's if they do them or 1200's if not
iSelfBuild
Cheers guys, will they be OK with 100mm bearing. Thought it had to be 150mm?
Nickfromwales
I only needed 100mm for steels holding 2 storeys of stone and brick up . A 6x4 lintel as a pad only bears 100mm widthways. ?
