Wood wool board as final internal finish

Has anyone used wood wool board (eg https://www.celticsustainables.co.uk/savolit-plus-wood-wool-boards/ ) as a final finish on walls, albeit painted? We've got quite high vaulted cielings and a concrete floor so our architect suggested this to be used in some areas to help improve the acoustics, as well as for the aesthetics of it. I quite like the look of it - and also the fact we will reduce some of our skimming costs. Has anyone here used this before in this way?

Are they not an expensive alternative to plasterboard

The manufacture seems to be recommending lime plaster or render

I’d check with the manufacturer if they are flammable If you have to apply a fireproof paint It will be quite expensive

No but Center Parcs used to in their villas in the non-essential areas and it looks like sh#t …

At £35 ish for the same coverage as your standard board and skim, it is probably double the cost. It also isn’t fire resistant so would need an (expensive) intumescent coating

Aha, good point re fire resistance. They are described as non-flammable and self-extinguishing, but comes down to the regs I guess. I have emailed the UK distributor to ask...

I would forget any monetary saving

It will be more expensive

But if it is the look you like

Go for it Speak to the manufacturers

Then get a decision off BC

They May make your decision for you

Those wood wool boards are rough as they're specifically designed to carry plaster or render. You'll also find that they're not acoustically rated. The acoustic rated ones are a lot more expensive. You can get some nicer panels with both fire and acoustic ratings from Troldtekt or Celenit but they will cost significantly more .

True, but what I can see these ones and just the standard look pretty similar - and I wonder if the premium is just for the rating certificate. I'll see if I can get some samples of both

For what it's worth I just had the same thought for a cathedral ceiling / wood floor application.

My notes:

"Construction" grade cheaper / rougher (3 mm fibres)

"Decor" grade spendier / finer (1 mm or 1.5 mm fibres)

https://online.depo-diy.lt/product/701

Plaster over the rougher construction grade for sound isolation. Leave the decor grade unfinished for sound absorption.

Some fire and fitting notes:

Painting sounds like a pain:

Will probably end up with taped and jointed plasterboard. Will probably regret it acoustically!

I don't think suspending the ceiling on the 'genieclip' style donuts plus metal bars will achieve the same result. Those are for isolation not absorption. More notes to self:

Genieclip:

Equivalent for hanging plasterboard off joists on metal channels

Bathroom / bedroom perhaps.
