Estimates are calculating we need about 36 tonnes of mortar for our whole build.  Builder has recommended looking into a mortar silo rather than mixing on site.

thoughts??

I would get tubs, delivered fresh every 3-4 days, unless you have 10 brickies on site a silo will sit there for weeks before it’s used.

But obviously phone up and look at quantities and find out how much they will use a day.

A mixer is also fine

We used 40 ton of sand on our last and probably more on our next

Silo would be overkill and a very expensive option

that is a significant amount of mortar - what are you building ..?! Doubt you’ll get a silo (they are hens teeth unless you’re building an estate) and you have to constantly use the contents over a 2 week period or you get issues.

+1 to this, easy and consistent and once you’ve got 3 or 4 tubs in circulation you’ll find they fly through it. It’s also a very quiet and mess free way as no mixing on site and there are no cement bags everywhere.

Hmmmm... builder said he thought 36 tonnes.  My estimate is showing 168 bags of cement and 18 bulk bags of building sand.  Doesn't add up to 36 tonnes does it?

Building 5 bed detached, 250sqm ish.

Will look into tubs.

Your builder may have used an online calculator for mortar, which includes the weight of water in the mortar, you are only looking at the dry material weight

unless you have a min of 5 brickies on site just use a mixer.
