Hey group,

Can anyone recommend a good level of acoustic insulation? Currently on the building warrant its 25mm acoustic wool but i imagine thats the minimum/basic between the rooms, im hoping to get some good sound proofing.

Thanks in advance!

If your only insulating between rooms 25 mil of acoustic is normal

It’s literally to stop the sound rattling around

The majority I use on commercial is 25 and 50

There’s a lot of confusion with soundproofing

Many of the house builders have us filling bathroom and toilet walls with 70 mil of loft insulation Which does hardly anything

We fill office and split student rooms with 25 mil

Party walls between blocks with 50 mil

As long as you use Acoustic (ISO)

25 mil Will do the job

100 mil lap at the top and bottom Staples to hold it in place

I've never seen less than 75mm installed on domestic B-Regs installs. I usually spec 100mm acoustic with soil / waste pipes 'boxed in' to eliminate the noise of water flowing.

I would not want 25mm in my house tbh, and didn't even know this could be bought at 25mm!!

75mm minimum, 100mm better. Box ( surround ) all waste pipes with the same as well as you can.

It depends what you want to achieve - it's not only the insulation quit - it's also all the other components of the partition, and whether you're only concerned with airborne sound, or if impact sound is an issue. Knauf and British Gypsum both produce useful guides.

FWIW, the partitions on my next project will have staggered studs to physically & acoustically separate the two faces of the partition, with 1 layer of ply and 1 of plasterboard each side, 50mm acoustic quit between, and acoustic sealant at all edges and joints.

If I was using all plasterboard instead of plasterboard + ply, that would give me 57dB nominal sound insulation.

I'm about to buy 100mm acoustic insulation from b&q for above the downstairs ceilings/upstairs floor and hope this, will suffice?

Anybody willing to comment. It would be appreciated.
