Windposts

Recommended Posts

What’s the spec from the SEng..?

Last ones we did were inserted into the outer skin on some 12m block walls and they were just 150mm box section from memory with welded end plates and welded tabs.

These were bolted to the founds and then built in. They are nothing special for a steel fabricator to add to the steel order I expect.

Not sure where you’re located but ACS do them in standard sizes

You need a structural engineer. Wind posts have to be designed for the building. They can be steel, reinforced concrete, etc and need to be sized to suit. Often they may be sized to suit the buildup. eg 100mm steel post in a 100mm blockwork wall. A project I'm working on is an exposed elevated site in the west of Ireland a few hundred meters from the Atlantic and has 450 x 215mm reinforced concrete windposts. The 215mm is to match the block on flat wall. In other areas the windposts are 215x215mm. That's an extreme case but gives you the idea of how they need to be specially designed.

The Ancon stainless ones are expensive but decent spec.  They seem to work by making them easy for the SE to specify and the builder to install.  They have slots for wall ties and different top connection options.  Once they are built in they act in tandem with the masonry.  We have lots where there are just skinny piers between openings that would otherwise fail.
